Divers set to renew search in SF Bay

January 11, 2003 Posted: 04:55:09 AM PST

By TY PHILLIPS and PATRICK GIBLIN

Divers plan to return to San Francisco Bay today to determine if an object found two days ago is a body.

Searchers with sonar equipment spotted the object Thursday afternoon while hunting for clues in the disappearance of

Laci Peterson, the 27-year-old pregnant Modestan who has been missing since Christmas Eve.

Modesto police said they put off the object's retrieval until today to give divers a rest and to let stormy weather pass.

Nevertheless, the media showed up Friday at the Berkeley Marina on the chance that divers would go after the object. But police stuck to their plan to attempt the retrieval today.

Officials said there was a 50 percent chance of the object's being a body.

The Bee reported incorrectly Friday that a body -- not Laci Peterson's -- had been pulled from the bay. Police told of the body's recovery on Thursday, then later in the day alerted The Bee that the report was incorrect, and that no body had been found. The Bee received the corrected information before press time, but the incorrect report still appeared in Friday's editions.

"Clearly, in the media frenzy that is associated with this case, there have been a number of rumors that have made it difficult to separate fact from fiction," Police Chief Roy Wasden said. "That led to a miscommunication between The Bee and the Police Department."

Peterson's husband, Scott, 30, has told police that he last saw his wife at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 24 as he left to go fishing out of the Berkeley Marina. He said his wife had planned on taking their dog for a walk in East La Loma Park.

Family members at the volunteer search center Friday clung to hope that gets more difficult to summon with each passing day.

"As a family, we don't feel that (today's) search will end up having anything to do with finding Laci," said Amy Rocha, Laci Peterson's sister.

"They're trying to clear Scott, and they're going to have to search that area to do that. We just feel that it's been so hyped that it's going to be Laci. And we don't believe that it is."

She said the family has "the same positive attitude we've always had."

"But it has gotten harder. The days go by so quickly for us that sometimes we don't realize how long it has been."

At the marina, harbor master Ann Rial Hardinger said the mystery object was found close to the end of the old Berkeley pier, which is 2 1/2 miles long. Anglers said the water depth at the end of the pier is 12 to 17 feet.

Hardinger said searchers had been using three of the harbor's boats while operating the sonar device.

Put Geragos down as WRONG on that question, too.

Heard someone in the background go "Oh my!" when the true timeline came out.

What I meant was it wouldn't bother him one bit to be proven wrong on national TV. That man has no shame.

Thanks for the info.

What do you, or anyone think about Geraldo's comments re: the minimum legal catch for a sturgeon is 100lbs?

Also, someone else researched and found out that herring is the bait of choice for sturgeon fishing.

Would that be live bait or frozen? He had a gas receipt and the boat launch receipt with time, but no day.

If his bait had to be live the guy at the Berkeley Marina said he didn't sell any live bait to Scott.

But if the bait can be used frozen he could have bought that anywhere and anytime and kept it in a freezer at his warehouse.

If he was fishning he needed bait.

I needed to look for the picture you posted.

Geraldo had a receipt that he said one of his guys bought from the same launch machine, it showed time and date.

I have a vid cap on my website about Laci's disappearance of the launch ramp ticket box.

The URL for the page is on my home page here if anyone is interested. It's in the Berkely Marina Search area of the page.

Really? Time and date? The news reports at the beginning of the case made a big deal about the fact that there was only a time stamp, thus it was not really an alibi.

Where's Pbear8? I bet he/she would know. Pbear8 can I grab your picture of Brook's Island for my Laci webpage? I will give you credit naturally.

Yeah they showed it. It's 5 bucks and 15 miles away, if you want a souvenir. : )

If no one knew where he was that day, does it make sense that he would point the police in the directon of the body? I went fishing in the bay that I dumped her body in. I don't think so. I would require handeling the body several times if she was dead before he left home. Why take the chance. Why not: Let's go for a ride.? I think the bay may be a red herring.

Thanks for the info on the sturgeon size and the launch ticket.

When I was researching for a website on the Sund/Pelosso case back before they happened onto CAry Stayner, we found that there were many errors printed in newspapers in that area.

The tarp must have covered the boat when he drove it away.

Didn't they bring the tarp up out of the Bay on the first day they were out there? At least that is what I remember hearing.

well done hergus...

it is hard to tell but does that truck have one of those fitted tops on it...

I wonder about transporting a body in that boat or even the truck unless there was a top.....of course, there is that large carry-all in the truck just behind the seats....ugh..

I didn't watch Larry King. Are you referring to 8:30pm on 12/23 as the true timeline?

Yes. The MPD police chief confirmed that the phone call was the last time that anybody, other than SP, has seen or heard from Laci. Geragos had said that neighbors saw her walking in the neighborhood on the 24th.

Admiral Pbear here (she) says of course you can use that picture. I also posted some of the Marina boat launch and looking from the marina entrance to the GGB on an earlier thread. If you need anything else photographed, let me know, I have a little time today.

Don't know about the time/date stamp on the boat launch receipt. Have heard only a time was there, but perhaps I misunderstood. If I leave early today I might be able to swing by the Marina. If I deposit $5.00, I suppose that would give us the answer.

My knowledge of fishing is limited. As you've probably read on the other threads, here is where my 'expertise'(such as it is)lies - I own a large sailboat, teach sail-training to at-risk youth, live near the Berkeley Marina, and own a licensed master (Captain PBear) who runs boats in the Bay. We have lots of pictures and charts of the Bay and sail it often. So I might be able to help in any of those areas.
