Divers set to renew search in SF Bay

January 11, 2003 Posted: 04:55:09 AM PST

By TY PHILLIPS and PATRICK GIBLIN

Divers plan to return to San Francisco Bay today to determine if an object found two days ago is a body.

Searchers with sonar equipment spotted the object Thursday afternoon while hunting for clues in the disappearance of

Laci Peterson, the 27-year-old pregnant Modestan who has been missing since Christmas Eve.

Modesto police said they put off the object's retrieval until today to give divers a rest and to let stormy weather pass.

Nevertheless, the media showed up Friday at the Berkeley Marina on the chance that divers would go after the object. But police stuck to their plan to attempt the retrieval today.

Officials said there was a 50 percent chance of the object's being a body.

The Bee reported incorrectly Friday that a body -- not Laci Peterson's -- had been pulled from the bay. Police told of the body's recovery on Thursday, then later in the day alerted The Bee that the report was incorrect, and that no body had been found. The Bee received the corrected information before press time, but the incorrect report still appeared in Friday's editions.

"Clearly, in the media frenzy that is associated with this case, there have been a number of rumors that have made it difficult to separate fact from fiction," Police Chief Roy Wasden said. "That led to a miscommunication between The Bee and the Police Department."

Peterson's husband, Scott, 30, has told police that he last saw his wife at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 24 as he left to go fishing out of the Berkeley Marina. He said his wife had planned on taking their dog for a walk in East La Loma Park.

Family members at the volunteer search center Friday clung to hope that gets more difficult to summon with each passing day.

"As a family, we don't feel that (today's) search will end up having anything to do with finding Laci," said Amy Rocha, Laci Peterson's sister.

"They're trying to clear Scott, and they're going to have to search that area to do that. We just feel that it's been so hyped that it's going to be Laci. And we don't believe that it is."

She said the family has "the same positive attitude we've always had."

"But it has gotten harder. The days go by so quickly for us that sometimes we don't realize how long it has been."

At the marina, harbor master Ann Rial Hardinger said the mystery object was found close to the end of the old Berkeley pier, which is 2 1/2 miles long. Anglers said the water depth at the end of the pier is 12 to 17 feet.

Hardinger said searchers had been using three of the harbor's boats while operating the sonar device.

Check out #440. It's a live webcam and it's getting dark, darn.

Good show, RG!

Do they have tapes of the webcams? If so, maybe that is why LE doesn't buy dear husband's story? Hummmm?

They could have been recorded over before they were analyzed, though.

I sure hope not. I bet this might be one reason why the cops are seeking to confirm his story. Either the tapes were taped over, or else he's not on that tape anywhere near the time he said he was there, or else he's not on the tape at all.

Back in my college days I worked at a Blockbuster. For their security camera, we used one tape for every day of the month, so it would be about a month before the tape was taped over.

Even if this webcam tapes over their tapes within a week, you'd think the cops got ahold of the tape for 12/24. If they didn't, they damn sure should have.

If the webcam tapes are taped over every day, then there's not much point in having a webcam.

Good work, BTW!!

Do you know how far it is from the boat ramp to Brook's Island?

It would take about 15 - 20 minutes to get to Brooks Island in a boat that size with a 15hp engine.

Yes, you would normally stay fairly close in to make that trip, it's basically a straight shot. I posted a picture I took of it on another thread.

Thanks. I'd like to see if any vehicles belonging to any potential new squeezes show up on the ATM tape, too. Somebody had to get that receipt and maybe a water sample from the marina to splash around the toy boat.

The ATM would likely only take periodic photographs, maybe even only after the ATM is activated by a customer.

I figure the MPD has looked into that, at least I hope so. That little boat of his would have stuck out like a sore thumb, like you said.

*Whew*

I've been on those Townsend threads all day, and I was afraid I was being punished.

So, will I be able to come back to this tomorrow and understand what you're talking about?

So, what you are saying is, you can get a time ticket without even putting a boat in the water?

Absolutely. Unattended boat launch with automated machine. Ticket is left in windshield at parking area to prove the vehicle with the empty trailer paid to launch a boat.

We're watching Larry King Live. It has been confirmed that the police have a "blue tarp" they are running forensic tests on.

The tarp must have covered the boat when he drove it away.

The chief is NOT ruling Scott out as a suspect. Not at all.

OMG......you forgot to warn me that GERAGOS was on there.

You know my theory about him....if he defends you on national TV, you'd guilty!

I'm going to catch this on the rerun.

Anything new?

Put Geragos down as WRONG on that question, too.

He loves to spread disinformation!
