"Terrorists target larger airplanes so as to get more bang for their buck. And with so little fuel on board just where were the terrorists going to fly the plane?"

Rationale is not necessarily a prioriry with terrorism, is it?

"At this point in time, I'd favor a Loss of Control due to overloading, but do acknowledge there are other possibilities."

Odds you you are probably correct, but the post 9/11 cynics in some of us cannot help think that more sinister factors may forevermore be at work.

Thanks!, how about the airspeed-type definition earlier mentioned, something like KIA? I gathered the K was a reference to metric measurement.

Thank you. I can visualize that. It just sounded weird to me today. :)

KIAS

Knots Indicated AirSpeed

This is the relevant measurement used for most performance speeds.

KIAS, is Knots Indicated Air Speed.

Indicated means that it is what the airplane actually "feels", and is what the airspeed indicator actually reads. This is important because as you go higher your indicated airspeed decreases for any "True" airspeed (KTAS). This is due to decreasing air density with altitude.

Airspeed indicators really measure dynamic pressure (1/2 density XV^2), which is what determines the aerodynamic forces on the machine, and hence it's operating limitations.

AOA explains why an A/C (wing) can stall at any speed, not jsut at slow speed as it normally does. (That's about the end of my aerodynamic knowledge on wings!)

So how are things in ChadWorld.........?

Unless the passenger list included someone named Muhammad or Rasheed.

... with a forward seat and thus close proximity to the cockpit. Are the cockpits of these little commuter planes always locked up tight? If not, Allah may have instructed one of his followers to grab that yoke and play Twister. </tinfoilterrorscenario>

I should say; airspeed indicators measure dynamic pressure (hold you hand out the window of a moving car, that pretty much is dynamic pressure) and are calibrated to read the corresponding airspeed assuming standard Sea Level density.

"post 9/11 cynics in some of us cannot help think that more sinister factors may forevermore be at work."

My "T" meter didn't go off on this one because it's not a likely target of the murdering "T's"...

BUT....A hangar at the airport...? They'd rather hit something like an office bldg etc-max casualities for their murdering cult religion... jmho!

I have been informed that two of our graduate students
were on the plane that crashed on departure from Charlotte
this morning tragically killing all onboard. They were

Sreenivasa Badam
Ganeshram Sreenivasan

These were outstanding young men and will be sorely
missed here. Please keep them, their families,
and their friends in your thoughts and prayers.

"The drive to the airport in your car is the most dangerous part of the trip. If you are in Houston this is very true."

I lived in SW Houston for two years ('98 - '00) and never experienced any danger on the freeways (I-10, 45 or 59). I preferred George Bush Int'l Airport to Hobby, even though it was a hell of a drive from Westheimer/Hillcroft.

Actually that was part of an old joke I heard. It is a pretty area but I guess it depends on what your used to. We have former neighbors that retired and moved out toward Boone. They have a beautiful view from their 25 acres on the side of the mountain and as the husband said that if he wanted to he could go out and flip his hamburgers buck naked!

I told him to not stand too close to the grill and that I'd just assume have a salad...

Anyway...can anyone tell me why Trace Gallagher keeps saying "angle of attack?" My head keeps envisioning a dogfight. I'd ask the dh, but he's currently in the air.

Angle of attack is referring to the relative angle that the wing cross section is moving through the air. To achieve lift, air flows over the wing. The air across the top of the wing produces a low pressure condition, "sucking" the wing up. Too high an angle and the wing no longer develops lift. Try this: stick your hand out the window of a car. Like a wing airfoil you can shape your hand so it is "lifted" by the air. Now increase the angle of your hand. Eventually, your hand becomes like a dam to the air - that is the extreme of a "high angle of attack".

Actually, a Muslim was depicted at Greenville waiting for his Muslim friend who was supposedly on the plane! I would be even more concerned about possible Muslims among the repair and maintenance crews
