I don't remember the rules, but Senators can put holds on them. I just don't remember if they must be from the same state..... Seems Byrd had a hold placed on one sometime back that never got to a hearing.... I know that they usually look for support from the home state Senators....

Remember how during the campaign in 2000, Michael Savage would play the W clip with him saying, Don't worry, I know what I am doing." Yeah! Our president was in a unique postion to grow up studying Nixon, Ford, and especially Reagan and GHW Bush. He also has had occasion to meet his true Master and learn at His feet.
At a meeting for conservative activists in Illinois, with W's presidental campaign. At Q&A time, I had occasion to relate what I thought were as yet unmentioned concerns in the room, telling a field director of his primary campaign that we weren't going to apply ourselves to help him just so we could see more O'Connors, Kennedys and Souters on the bench, or to see our private and governmental sovereignties given up - especially to any international power.
The man's reply seemed to convey that W had discussed such things with his inner circle. As I recall, he said, "You won't be disappointed."
I think that man was on to something.

TLB....Deb is correct in her analysis re: CFR.
And pragmatism is NOT a four-letter word. You can use it....learn it....love it.
Main Entry: prag·ma·tism
Pronunciation: 'prag-m&-"ti-z&m
Function: noun
Date: circa 1864
1 : a practical approach to problems and affairs
2 : an American movement in philosophy founded by C. S. Peirce and William James and marked by the doctrines that the meaning of conceptions is to be sought in their practical bearings, that the function of thought is to guide action, and that truth is preeminently to be tested by the practical consequences of belief.

There's something about silent or secret "cards" from home state Senators and the nominees have to get approval cards or the guy's in trouble.
Didn't John Ashcroft put a secret hold on Judge White and stop his vote because he was a home state Senator? Maybe, it's the reason for the hold that's secret.
I have now totally confused my little self and my brain is hot.

Well....for not planning......you done good.
And agree....can't you just imagine his 'giggle' when he flipped that finger of friendship?
And for Frist to walk off the floor today and comment that after sitting for 45 minutes listening to the garbage, he was NOT going to sit there and listen to all 3 hours...is priceless.
Damn it's been a GOOD day!
And I have a feeling the Dems are NOT going to know what hit them. New tone....new rules...and now the deconstruction begins!!

I wonder if the Dems ever feel like someone on the receiving end of one of Morphy's or Nimzovich's better games...

Say all the shit about Lott you want and blame him for all you want but never forget he has the third highest conservative voting record in the Senate. Lott has an excellent voting record -- Lott's leadership record s*cks!

I will not gloat... (snippage of gloating)
Trying to be good....trying to be good....ah, to hell with it, eh?
I look at this as welcome news of Bush and crew coming out swinging (at long last!), but I'm staying cautiously optimistic for the long term. Things can still turn south real quick for Bush and the Republicans. Two years is a very long time in political terms.
I definitely have some differences with Bush's positions, especially domestically, but I separate my disagreement for his stances on some issues from respect for the man himself. Some of the more strident naysayers should keep that in mind.
But hey, what the hell, I'll join in the gloating. Today is a good day. :)

I do think that Frist will bring a different approach for a while at least. But the Senate has it's own rules and they are deeply rooted.... A man that gets himself through breakthrough studies at Harvard Medical School by "adopting" cats from animal shelters, in order to experiment on them...
...won't be pussy-footing around and he won't let that 'Tom' stand in his way.

Question--Will the tv media give as much attention to the usual suspects and meretricious charges this time around?--NOW, ACLU,
Americans Hating the US (for sep. of church and state.) I've had about all I can stand of Ralph Nees' mug on tv, and NOW's whiney spinmeisters.
Obviously, before, media could talk with the "Leaders" of the Dems and the committee, and ignore the Republicans for the most part. I hope the newly made Repub. majority responds to EVERY
attempt at spin the Dems put out.
