At least give the family that option ---this wasn't a hostage situation and he wasn't armed ---a few minutes to go get the family wouldn't have hurt.

The thought occurred to me regarding whether they knew WHO he was before he jumped. I don't think the article says. But if they did, yeah, go for it !...
