Liberals will go to any lengths to demonstrate a moral equivalency between American culture and the most backward and repressive countries in the world. They cannot accept genuine criticism of any Third World cultures, so they instead try to smear the West. Octavio Romano, however, reaches a new low in an article in the Chronicle, in which he attempts to draw a parallel between Afghan women wearing burqas, and American women using cosmetics.
Romanos analogy is not only preposterous, but faulty. The mandatory donning of burqas by Afghan women, is completely different from American women choosing to apply cosmetics. Even if not enforced, to wear a burqa is to conceal oneself, whereas the freedom of American women to paint themselves is to say, ''look at me.'' One hides, the other enhances.
There is no denying that societal pressure to look attractive does exist in this country and there will always be those who go to extremes to achieve physical perfection. But this can hardly be associated with the oppressive burqa, which blots out womens very identities by turning them into anonymous, shapeless ghosts. When it comes to the status of women, there is absolutely nothing in American culture to compare with Islamic culture. And furthermore, in the U.S. women are not beaten for going out without makeup.
The fact that Romano is ''emeritus professor of behavioral sciences, School of Public Health at UC Berkeley'' is truly frightening. Our university professors spout leftist ideology on a regular basis, but the sheer stupidity of Romanos claim is simply baffling. In one fell swoop, he manages to trivialize both the deplorable situation of women in Islamic countries and the considerable achievements of women in America. ''The American burqa industry'' is further proof that as long as it has an anti-American angle, the Chronicle will publish it.

The Afgan woman was forced to wear burquas, and they also wear makeup from what I've seen on news footage.
I was sort of amazed at some of the women that had their nails polished, but could barely find food to eat.
They were also shown slipping to have their face made up and hair done.

What an affirmative action idiot!
What is the moral equivalency to males killing their daughters for no reason in Muslim families?
What is the moral equivalent to cliteradectomy by Muslims?

There are a lot of reasons women wear burqas, I'm sure. Showing deference to men among the highest. But hiding their identities? I really don't think that is why they wear burqas. The whole premise of the article is wrong from the beginning.

One reason that women wear burqas in Islamic societies is to protect themselves from ogling and harassment from men. Of course it can be argued that why should women be punished for men's obnoxious behavior. But the fact remains, Afghani women are still covering themselves largely for safety reasons, and also because it's difficult to throw off society's restrictions, no one wants to be the first to do it.

The professor is an idiot. Let's sentence him to a makeover at Chez Pierre's, then he can find out what a "makeover" is all about--to enhance one's natural features.

When it comes to the status of women, there is absolutely nothing in American culture to compare with Islamic culture. The left is simply grasping at straws. They will say anything to try and make us look like the bad guys. Their desperation is really starting to show....

Simple...if an American woman wars a burqua she is laughed at....
If an islamic woman wears cosmetics in public she is stoned to death
