Former Blaine City Council member David White has started a petition to recall U.S. Sen. Patty Murray from office for comments she made recently about terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.

White said he will begin circulating the petition soon and will ask the Whatcom County Republican Party to solicit signatures, then present the petition to federal officials.

Sen. Murray could go back in time and make this same stupid comparison to a devastated Germany after World War I:

"Why are people so supportive of [Hitler] in Germany?" this particular speaker asked rhetorically, and then continued: "He has been in many areas that are riddled with poverty. People don’t have phones, no sewers, no roads, no schools, no health care, no facilities just to make sure their daily lives are okay. He’s been out in the country as our elected leader building roads, building schools, building infrastructure, building day care facilities, building health care facilities, and the people are extremely grateful. It made their lives better. [The US has] not done that. [The US has not] been out in Germany helping them build infrastructure. How would they look at [the US] today if [it] had been there helping them with some of that, rather than just being the people who are going to bomb in Dresden and march on Berlin?"

Maybe you can tell the troops that Channel 5 news just said that J. Dunn said she turned down the Air Transportation board job because she is thinking of running for the Senate in 2004!

My education reminds me that it is important to read the entire speech before coming to judgment. As we all know there is always something behind a "sound bite" or headline. Are we not yet tired of "National Enquire" type journalism? How will we really know what is the truth when all we get from the media is hype, sensationalism, and information taken out of context?

It is hard for us to imagine that Bin Laden could be popular in any way. However, the fact is he has been very successful at recruiting hopeless, desperate Arabs. Why has he been so successful? What is he doing to win supporters? Perhaps Murray was addressing this issue? Most of us (including school children) can't imagine his appeal. I think it is important that we look at how he has been able to terrorize the world. Hitler, Stalin, etc, have all been studied. Perhaps understanding (not agreeing with his tactics) is the first step to creating solutions.

As a resident of Washington State, I am afraid that Mr. White will do more damage than good. We have to remember that our brave soldiers died in Iraq so that Iraqis could be free. We must be careful that we too do not seek to quell free speech or rush to judgment. To attack Senator Murray over something like this is just going to turn Washingtonians off. You can attack her voting record, but everyone knows that Patty Murray is no terrorist. Mr. White looks small and silly calling her one. We need to focus our energy on fighting terrorism not each other.

Welcome to FR....I see your new. Don't expect a lot of support around here in defending Patty Murry.

First off, I heard Patty's entire speech so don't be so quick to judge yourself that all we are aware of is a "sound bite". Patty does not need to be taken out of context to be considered a complete idiot. Too bad you weren't around here when this happened as I'm dissapointed we missed your defense of Patty at that time.

I would be interested in your take as to how a recall effort is somehow construed to be a quelling of free speech. Seems to me that a recall process is the very embodiment of our capability of free speech. Need I remind you that ONLY government can prevent free speech? To try to suggest that anything that Mr. White can do to supress free speech quite frankly comes off as "small and silly".

The attempt on your part to try to convince us that we need to "understand" Patty only serves to warn fellow Freepers as to your leanings....which we sadly understand all too well.

Enjoy your stay!

The point I was making is that many people on all sides are so reactive that they make judgments before having all the information. I am glad you read the speech. Yet, as you know perspective is everything. While you may read something sinister into Patty's speech, others may not. There has been a great effort by some groups to stop people from speaking. I have been personally harassed in an effort to intimidate my silence. Others have lost their jobs. There are groups that try to personally ruin or intimidate anyone with a voice of a different opinion be it left or right. I wonder why people are so afraid? What happened with disagreeing but respecting another's right to speak? You suspect my "leanings." We are all Americans that are concerned with terrorism. After your last response I am sure I will get more insults. It is easy to belittle others while hiding behind the safety of a computer. I hope you can put your insults aside and try uniting Americans on our fight of terrorism. We have a common goal. Why waste time with nonsense? Patty is a terrorist like Lott is a KKK member. It is a tit for tat "witch hunt." However, many fellow Republicans wanted Lott to go. Especially the guy who took his place. Yes, it is "silly." Two wrongs never make a right. Yet, we keep playing the political slime game.

Jeeze! You're so all over the map I'm not sure where to even begin in response.

For starters, first you claim that response to Patty's remarks are but a product of only hearing "sound bites". When that was refuted, you resort to reactions against Patty being a matter of perspective. Perhaps if Patty had taken your advice and been better informed herself, this incident could have been avoided all together. (Please show me one Daycare center built by Osama....perhaps one of those built to help out the women of Afganistan under the Taliban rule, which weren't even allowed them to leave the home to get to said daycare center.) My perspective on Patty's statement is that it is total BS. I saw nothing "sinister" but rather so unimaginably stupid, I question how this women functions as a Senator.

Now, moving on, you say there is a great effort by some groups to stop people from speaking. Just how is this possible? People are being locked up, executed, or what? It seems you also need a little more information yourself on the nature of free speech. You, I, Everyone in this country has the right to say whatever they wish. This does not however preclude any repercussions for what we have said. If I were to say something as stupid, as say Patty did, I should fully expect to be called on it. Had I the pulpit that Patty does I should expect that, As Patty found out, that a LOT of people would call me on it. You will find no one here that doesn't think that Patty had no right to say what she did, but you will certainly find many that will hold her accountable for what she has said. While you may consider this "harassement" or "intimidation" I see it as simple accountability.

Frankly, your post comes across as simply another "can't we all just get along" statement.

NO WE CAN'T!!!!

As long a Patty and her sympathizers continue to push our nation closer to socialism, I will continue to view her as the purveyor of a slightly less violent means to the same end as many a terrorist. For that reason, I NEVER intend to "get along", I will play the political slime game, I will do whatever I can to discredit, and I certainly have no intention of putting insults aside....though I would love to know how it is you think I insulted you....must be a matter of perception.
