USS Carl Vinson Sailors Spread Holiday Cheer to Local Community

Story Number: NNS021231-11
Release Date: 12/31/2002 11:28:00 AM

By Journalist 3rd Class (SW/AW) Mat Sohl, USS Carl Vinson Public Affairs

BREMERTON, Wash. (NNS) -- This holiday season, the men and woman stationed aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) are reaching out to serve their community through various holiday-themed service projects in the local area.

One of the key community service projects Vinson Sailors participated in this holiday season was the Kitsap County Resources’ (KCR) Christmas Angel Program, which provides gifts to more than 3,000 children of low-income Kitsap County families.

The Christmas Angel Program takes flight with the support of members of the local Kitsap County community. Donations of toys and clothing come from various local businesses, labor groups, civic organizations, churches and military organizations.

Nearly 50 volunteers from Carl Vinson’s supply department gave their time and skills to assist with the program this year. For many of the Vinson volunteers, who handle the ship’s vast supply inventory, unloading and cataloging the thousands of gifts came as second nature.

“It’s important for us as Sailors to connect in a positive way with the community that we live in,” said Lt. Cmdr. Dave Nystrom, Carl Vinson’s assistant supply officer and the ship’s coordinator for the Christmas Angel Program. “Getting involved and making a difference helps instill a sense of community.

Manpower for the program was provided by KCR employees and various volunteers. “It’s all about the volunteers — without them we couldn’t get this done,” said Pamela Varner, KCR program coordinator.

“This is Carl Vinson’s first year involved, and we love them,” said Varner. “The work that they completed in one day normally takes us four or five days to do.”

Aside from organizing and helping distribute the gifts, many of the Sailors had the chance to interact and play with the children they were helping.

“I love to see smiling kids’ faces,” said Ship's Serviceman 3rd Class Kirsten Davis, who donned a Santa suit and handed out wrestling dolls and stuffed animals to all of the children at the event. “This is definitely a new experience for me, but it is a lot of fun being Santa for the day.”

Along with the Christmas Angel Program, other groups of Carl Vinson Sailors spent the holiday season spreading good will to the local Puget Sound area.

Various Carl Vinson clubs and organizations supported several toy and food drives. Dec. 23, a number of Vinson Sailors donned their dress uniforms and visited Seattle’s Children’s Hospital with a truckload of toys donated by the ship’s spouses clubs.

“It’s important for the ship and all of the Sailors in the area to try their best to let everyone in the area know that we are here to help, especially during the holidays.” said Storekeeper 1st Class (SW/AW) Lester Wright.

Saint-Nectaire Airedale Ile d'Yeu, sounds like it might be snippy about it, checking in to wish all our Canteeners and Military Godspeed and God's protection in the New Year.

I have a cream cheese "cheese ball" recipe:

2- 8 oz. of Cream Cheese (softened)
1- 2 1/2 oz bag of dried beef (usually found by the packaged lunch meat in the grocery)
2- bundles of scallions (green onions, cleaned and chopped)

Chop up all the onion and chop up the dried beef, mix in to the soften cream cheese, form into a ball and chill for an hour or two, serve with crackers and or celery sticks.

If you want some eggnog to go with that cheese, try:

CAPTAIN BUTT'S EGGNOG recipe, c. 1910:

Ten quarts of double cream whipped very stiff
Twelve dozen eggs
Six quarts of Bourbon whisky
One pint of rum.
Not recommended by the AMA;
Not recommended for consumption by one person

How about some faster than light cheese.

And to ring in the New Year, a little anvil firing.

God Bless You All in our U.S. Military....

Thank you for another year of freedom and safety and comfort. As a vet, I know you're far from home, missing family and what is normal to you. But please know there are a few of us back home here who remember you, hold you near to my heart, appreciate you and understand what you are sacrificing and pray for your safe return. You will never be forgotten or taken for granted. Now go do your job with your head held high. Happy New Year and Godspeed on your return.

May the new year be a doorway
to the dreams you create...

I wish everyone at the Canteen the best of everything throughout the New Year

I am thankful for the men and women who have volunteered to put themselves in harm’s way to seek out and eliminate the cancer of terrorism. I pray for the safe return of America’s fighting sons and daughters.

To those who came to the FR USO Canteen FReeper Style New Year's CHEESE Ball! ~ thank you coming! I hope you had a Gouda time. : ) Thank you all for your presence and the presents you brought our troops - your words, good wishes, and pictures. Thank you troops for your presence, too, and your present of protection, so we are FREE to create.

The Ball opened with something heartfelt and cheesy, and I'd like to give you all a party favor (No! It's not Al and Tipsy's book "courtesy" of their party.....hey, how many trees were sacrificed in the making of that Gorebage? Where's T.R.E.E.T.A?!) as you leave the Ball....It's a little bit Country. It's a little bit Rock 'n Roll. It's about a land called FREEDOM.....again, it may be heartfelt and cheesy, but, where else can you have a CHEESE Ball and call it Liberty? ~Abondance!~ Happy New Year! : ) G*d bless the USA!
