If I buy something at an Arizona store, the retailer pays sales taxes to Arizona. If I buy that exact same item over the Internet, the e-tailer may or may not collect and submit state sales taxes. That's not fair to our local merchants.

Wrong! One who purchases from an Arizona store pays sales taxes. The retailer just acts as uncompensated tax collector for the state. (But then it's better to fuzz up the situation so that the great unwashed don't catch on.) Wonder if in the interest of fairness this maroon would agree to eliminate the sales tax.

(Didn't think so ...)

Your post #36 about businesses pulling out of Santa Cruz is well worth a re-read for all the little hidden nuggets.

One observer stated that the anti-business atmosphere there is a result of two decades of "progressive" Santa Cruz city councils.

Translation: LIBERAL city councils.

An apologist stated that Santa Cruz isn't the only city that businesses are avoiding because it isn't the only city with environmental regulations.

Now we're getting somewhere. Has the city council been in the thrall of the Greens by enacting onerous environmental regulations driving up the costs of corporate business? Any bets?

Texas Instruments, Lipton and the William Wrigley Company have fled Santa Cruz. So its council has decided to play to one of the city's strengths, "tourism".

Oh, yah. Makes sense to concentrate its efforts on replacing good-paying jobs and benefits from major corporations with minimum-wage hotel maid and tour guide jobs.

Santa Cruz is dead meat along with other cities in AZ till their citizens wake up and vote the local leftist idiots out of office.

And the moronic AZ tea bag stuffer RINO will solve everything by raising taxes!

AZ "is" the state that elected John McCain, so I guess anything is possible.

Go ahead, rub it in.

He denied the city has been anti business, and said it has worked with companies that provide industrial jobs. He said companies that avoid Santa Cruz also avoid countless other areas with environmental regulations. You took the words out of my mouth. Funny that he mentioned the environmental regulations (even he understands at least subconsciously that extreme environmental regulations are detrimental to business...but let's keep it a secret now). Long term effect: People in Santa Cruz who voted for these idiots on the counsil will find fewer and fewer jobs there. People will start moving out. The remaining people will see their property values collapsing. They will join the first group. Pretty soon, Santa Cruz will become a retirement community for the wealthy, and the original leftists who voted for the morons will be out of the state and too poor to enjoy it! THEY WILL REAP TOMORROW WHAT THEY SOW (sic?) today!

It¹s only fair that those of us who enjoyed some of the perks of the economic boom times be willing to take some responsibility when it comes to the state budget crisis.

To paraphrase P.J. O'Rourke: Fairness is only good on the playground and perhaps in the bedroom, but not when your talking about my/our tax dollars. This self-serving RINO should give his own earnings back to the Gov't, as he doesn't represent me as a businessman what-so-ever.Thank god he's in Az.--- Just wait until the rich loud-mouth socialists here in Calif. to start barking up this tree. These types of people are poison to small businesses.

Thank-you, Leni.
There are many who simply whine about such "negative" information being posted on this forum.

We often focus on just the myriad federal and state regulations and "standards" that either hinder or promote business activity. But it is equally important to note the actions of local governments. The buffoonery practiced at the local level quickly percolates up to the floor of the U.S. Senate where "progressive" 'Rats attempt to impose the same "standards" nationwide.

I find it rather bizarre that the town council apologist would attempt to deflect criticism with his allusion to environmental regulations. No doubt the "standards" imposed throughout California are more strict than the rest of the nation. But I envision Lipton, Wrigley and Texas Instruments as involved in relatively clean industries, desirable by most any community. My guess is that these businesses were driven away due to a broader range of harassment concocted by the "progressive" extortionists. Anything from local zoning ordinances and property taxes to local "living wage" legislation could be the culprit. And more than likely a combination of factors.

Why should we expect a 1930s tax code to be effective in 2003.

This is just more of the "baby boomer" we are the smartest, greatest generation to ever walk the face of the earth BS.
In essence, he is saying, "Those dumbasses that kicked butt in WWII really didn't have a clue, be we the "new and improved generation" have all the answers."
And they may be right, look how well the "new and improved generation" handled the Viet Nam conflict.

"Dan was born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1949. While in school, Dan's favorite subject was economics. His study of that field has served him well over the years.'

Bwahahaahahaha
I did take a flyer on his age, but the generation that spawned McCain, Hillary!, Dashole, JJackson, Clintoon, et al, reveal their stripes, even through the abstract of the writen word.
LMAO

Correct, Willie. People don't pay much attention to their elected officials on the local level. In addition to the damage they can perpetrate on their various municipal, county and school boards, these bozos often move up from their local incubators to state and federal office.

I've seen some real liberal dregs of nature move up from local government to Congress just because their names (not voting records!) were well-known in the local environs, they had glib tongues and some questionable money sources.

My family budget is really tight and we're in debt right now. Based on this advice I think my husband should go into his boss and DEMAND higher pay. So what if the company says they can't afford it. I'm sure they'll find extra surplus on that money tree in their back yard. If the government can do, why can't we?
In the end, it will help others since we will be able to give more to others if we have more. Sound logic? Not really, but it runs along the same lines as these yo-yos for a tax hike.
