WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Rep. Bob Matsui of California has been named chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, heading up the House Democrats' efforts to regain control of the chamber in the 2004 elections.

"It is with great pride that I appoint Bob Matsui to be chair of the DCCC," incoming House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said. "He commands enormous respect for his legislative experience and political acumen."

Matsui, who has served in Congress for 24 years, is a member of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, where he is known as an expert on trade and Social Security.

As campaign committee chair, Matsui will be the first Asian-American to serve in the highest levels of the House Democratic leadership. He succeeds Nita Lowey, a New York Democrat.
