"all overpopulated countries have one thing in common -- socialisim!" Damn it if Tom has not finally come up with an argument for socialism. I never thought that I would see one that convinced me ... and I find it on FR!

We face a future world full of oldsters and then what?....

In "The Skeptical Environmentalist" the author shows that this process will lead to a stable earth population in about 50 to 100 years. The population will be several billion more than today but the poor countries will have gained in wealth and reduced their birthrate. The world will have an upheaval in economics to pay for a stable population but then we will also see an upgrading of the world's education. And free markets and ingenuity would lead to adequate resources for all people. That is the optimistic scenario.

A pesimistic scenario would lead to massive die off due to war, terrorism, or disease. It could be brought about by a militant religion that refuses to let birth rates stabilize. This seems at least equally likely unless we take on the world of islam while we can.

Now there's a revealing statement! A "militant religion" is one that's pro-life!

Good thing we have the Right to Keep and Bear Arms in America ... they're not going to do me like they've done my sisters in China who want to have children ... whoops, excuse me ... "refuse to let birth rates stabilize."

What a terrifying line ...

Overpopulation has nothing to do with available natural resources or population density, or even the sheer number of people. The decisive factor is the protection or confiscation of private property. Socialist countries can't deliver the goods. Their usual solution is to depopulate!
