Bush Feels 'Fine' After Smallpox Shot

President Bush (news - web sites) showed no ill effects Sunday from his smallpox vaccination, taking an early morning jog before going to church.

On the first day of a long Christmas stay at Camp David, Bush was up at 6:15 a.m. and jogging two hours later. He ran three miles in 21 minutes, 15 seconds. Later, he went to church.

Bush is feeling "absolutely, positively fine," said White House spokesman Adam Levine.

Experts estimate that 15 out of every 1 million people vaccinated for the first time will face life-threatening complications, and one or two will die. Reactions are less common for those being revaccinated, as Bush was on Saturday.

On Dec. 13, Bush directed as many as 500,000 U.S. troops to get smallpox vaccinations, part of an effort to guard against bioterrorism. He promised at the time to get the shot himself, though he said his family would not, because the risk of a domestic attack did not justify it.

Also at Camp David were Bush's parents, his twin daughters, and Laura Bush and her mother, Jenna Welch.

He and his father went for a walk Saturday night, and the family watched the film "About Schmidt," starring Jack Nicholson.

They certainly are playing this hard. Experts probably also say that if a million people step out of their bathtubs, one or two of them will slip and crack their heads.

Good point. Another thing to bear in mind is that people who were successfully vaccinated in childhood (such as Bush and most of the Boomer generation, including myself) are unlikely to have a really bad experience with the vaccine the second time around. This is important, because I suspect that a lot of the hysteria is coming from that age group.

I got one of those when I was 4~5 years old and it barely hurt at all.
I'm glad to hear that Dubya survived the ordeal.
I'm sure it helped clear the tears when they gave him a lollipop afterwards.

It's been 48 years and I still have the scar.

Yeah, the scars are round, and often about the size of a dime,
sometimes a little smaller, sometimes a little larger.
Kid's who were newly vaccinated would often "show-off" their scar to their friends.
(I can't remember what made the scars so interesting, heck, we were just kids.)
Anyway, most kids had their scars on their upper arm, but some chose to have it on the side of their upper thigh close to their rumps.
I'd be curious to know which one Dubya selected.
I'm sure we'll find out when the picture is posted on the "Day in the Life" thread.
