CA: Plastic pipe ban is ruled illegal

Plastic pipe manufacturers Friday hailed a court ruling that could clear the way for their product to be used in homes statewide as a victory for consumers over politics.

The industry sued the state in September, alleging Gov. Gray Davis' administration forced new home buyers to spend millions of additional dollars on housing by restricting the use of a plastic water pipe known as PEX.

I bought a house that was replumbed by the previous owner with PVC all bodged together (love Junkyard Wars!). As soon as the heat from the hot water heater was added to the slightly increased humidity from the clothes dryer, all hell broke loose.

Had a plumber friend come by and (for the price of a Pepperoni Pizza and cost of materials) replaced all the PVC with PEX. The only thing I didn't like is the cost of the crimpers to buy or rent (at least three sizes and each crimper is $150.00 or more to buy and $25.00 for 2 hours to rent). The supplies were dirt cheap and he borrowed the crimpers from work.

PEX adds less taste to water than copper does. PVC and CPVC are different.

Kitec is my brand of choice. It is actually PEX-AL-PEX with no vinyl in it.

aluminum wiring was a step down. PEX is a step up that happens to be a bit cheaper to install. the pipe costs about the same or more.

40 years long enough for you? I see lots of copper failing in 10 years. Learn the whole story then make up your mind. It will surprise you.

PEX can and does burst from freezing... but not as quick as copper. Not nearly as quick. If I was in your shoes I would choose PEX all the way. It is becoming the material of choice in these high altitude areas of Colorado.
