Carl Cameron just reported a conference call is scheduled for Monday....to pick a new ML.
Uh, Don Nickles gave Frist his endorsement for SML this morning. In fact, he was the first to do so. In was joined in this endorsement by others just as conservative as he is. And you're proposing to pressure Nickles into withdrawing his endorsement of Frist so he can become SML himself? Did I get that right?
Opponents of abortion on demand are likely to be deeply disappointed. While Trent Lott, R-Miss., had promised to bring to the floor for a quick, early vote a bill restricting partial-birth abortion, Frist championed the nomination by President Clinton of former Surgeon General David Satcher, a fervent supporter of unrestricted abortion and someone who actually performed abortions.
Satcher continued to serve in the Bush administration until earlier this year.
While Satcher's nomination was widely presumed to have originated with Vice President Al Gore, like Satcher, a Tennessean, his confirmation was actually championed by Frist.
Frist once told National Public Radio that there are no absolute right, absolute wrong answers in medicine. During last year's stem-cell debate, Frist proposed using leftover embryos from in vitro fertilization clinics for scientific research. The Weekly Standard also noted that Frist believes there is a moral imperative to use one unsalvageable life to save another.
Frist's other pet causes while serving in the Senate have been fighting AIDS in Africa and fighting obesity among Americans. He believes the federal government needs to increase funding of physical education programs in school. He thinks spending $125 million on a Centers for Disease Control program encouraging children to engage in athletics is another top priority.
He sponsored a bill earlier this year that would have authorized a nationwide ad campaign to promote better nutrition and exercise and would have authorized money for bicycle paths, parks and recreation centers.
It sounds like Frist is a basket case. Great! That's all we need!!!!
So tell me, EW, what's the difference? Numbers USA give Nickles and Frist the exact same rating.
The Democrats will just change their mantra a little. Instead of saying "for the SAKE of the children", they'll just add "for the HEALTH of the children" and they'll get anything they want!
Frisk is a little too kookie for me.
My guess is there is a skeleton rattling in his closet.
If we could vote on it, I'd take Nichols.
From what I've gathered, he's at least conservative. He'd take the Senate in the right direction.
I don't care for the idea of Bush picking the Senate leader, either. He's got enough power already. He shouldn't have that much control, It wouldn't insure the separation of powers. He shouldn't push it!! Enough already!!!!
I'm not sure I understand, EW. You attacked Frist on his immigration record, which you apparently considered disqualifying, but then you support Nickles even though his immigration record is identical. How come Nickles' immigration record, which is the same as Frist's, doesn't disqualify him also?
What confuses me even more is your statement that you would support Tancredo for this post and yet he's not even in the US Senate. Are you sure you've thought all this through? Just axin, you understand.
I agree. PE was required when I was a kid, there was NO escaping it. As a result, kids actually learned how to move, learned teamwork, got a minimum of 1 hour a day exercise, and were healthier and smarter as a result. We actually PLAYED after school instead of watching TV.
Did you have the same objection to Bush and Frist "shoving through" the election of these same Republican Senators a couple months ago? How about all the funds the President raised to support those candidacies? Was the President "interfering" with the legislative branch there too?
Fact is, Senate Republicans owe George Bush big time. He didn't spend his time and political capital for nothing -- no politician ever does.
