You're exactly right. One has to WANT to quit to be successful. When I quit, my heart and lungs were beggin' me to stop. My Mom, unfortunately, never wanted to stop. I remember hounding her for a while in the mid-70s, but gave it up because she didn't appreciate me trying to get her to quit. I had to choose between my concern for her and preserving the peace. I chose peace. She quit in 2000 finally, after she got a tumor on her lung and had it removed. A few months before she died she told me that she wished she had quit years before she did. What could I say? "I know, Mom....so do I." She "enjoyed" smoking and never wanted to give it up. It was awful for me to see her smoking and choking so bad like that, but anyway.....

Death is not always peaceful. My mom was an alcoholic and died from liver disease. The pain drove her crazy. She finally went into seizures and died. Death is not always easy, I am afraid. No matter what we do or do not do.
