Gun Control: Why it Should Never Happen

“A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” That comes from the bill of rights, which is part of the constitution, the document that our country was founded on. Yet somehow, people now consider guns to be a liability issue, to be dangerous, and flat out wrong. So what do people want to do? They want to take away the guns that we are granted with, via the 2nd amendment. They think that if we take away the guns, all of the shootings will stop, crime will decrease, and the world would be a much happier place.

On the contrary, in 1997, after Australia passed the act to destroy 640,381 firearms, citizens were forced top line up, and have their guns confiscated. That should have made Australia a safe and pleasant place to live, right? Wrong again! In 1998 the crime in Australia dramatically increased. Homicides committed with firearms increased 300%. Not only that, armed robberies increased 44%. All these happened after the government decided to take away the firearms. However, that only INCREASED the crime rate. That’s why firearms should never be outlawed.

Firstly, the US is not the only country to suggest having a Gun Control act. In fact, the idea of taking away the right of people to own and bear arms has gone back, to near 1900. Yet gun control violates the 2nd amendment “Right to own and bear arms.” The constitution goes on to say “that the right to …bear arms…shall not be infringed.” So intuiting gun control would be contradicting the document this country was based on.

Secondly, guns are given a bad rap because they have been connected with more than a few hundred murders. However, Steven Milloy, author of the book "Junk Science Judo", notes that "the ranks of firearms owners produce about 1,000 accidental deaths each year" or about 0.0000167 accidental deaths per gun owner. Doctors, on the other hand, "account for 250,000 accidental patient deaths per year" (a figure often quoted in the Journal of the American Medical Association).

By taking away firearms, we are only increasing crime. So what would happen if we were to require that citizens be armed? Most people believe that would send crime rates skyrocketing. In Switzerland, there is a law that requires all male adults to keep a firearm in their household. The crime rates there are unbelievably low! So you do the math.

In closing, here is a list of countries having successful gun-control laws in the 20th Century -- and the results of those laws:

1915-1917 Ottoman Turkey, 1.5 million Armenians murdered

1929-1953 Soviet Union, 20 million people who opposed Joseph Stalin murdered

1933-1945 Nazi-occupied Europe, 13 million Jews, Gypsies, and others who opposed Hitler murdered

1948-1952 China, 20 million anti-communists or communist reformers murdered

1960-1981 Guatemala, 100,000 Maya Indians murdered 1971-1979 Uganda, 300,000 Christians and political rivals of Idi Amin murdered

1975-1979 Cambodia, 1 million educated persons murdered 1968-????

United States of America: To be announced later.

What would become of us if we had a gun control act issued. Would we end up happier? Or would we destroy each other? For we must remember--“Those who do not [cannot] know [remember] history, are doomed [condemned] to repeat it.”—George Santayana

It was a speech, not an essay.

Oh, OK. Then I approve of "you do the math." :-)

You are obviously raising your son correctly. Thank you for raising another courageous American citizen.

I agree with all the points of your post. I think the Founding Fathers thought it, as natural as rain, that the ability to feed ones family, hard times or good, was a form of social security the firearm offered to a colonial family.

In the political sense, with the recent discussions about smallpox vaccinations, I believe the Founding Fathers "vaccinated" the Republic against the "pox" of a dictator with the 2nd. Amendment.

What's to disagree with? If the numbers are true, they don't lie. Anyway, kudos to you and your son.

Thanks for the kind words.

Son of Doomonyou told me another student is giving a speech today in class on GUN CONTROL, can't wait for the report back on that. She will probably get an A+ from the teacher for the HCI drivel that will be delivered.

a dirty room, being necessary to the sanctity of the teenage mindset, the right of the parents to quibble and drone on, shall not be infringed...

your son did a great job, and it is interesting that the teacher gave out an "a"... their armor must be rusting and the writing must be on the wall... their grip on the children is slipping.

It's everyone's right to disagree with anyone's position or opinion on any issue, guns included, you don't want to have a firearm, that's your right, but in this case, most gun control arguements are wrong if not outright lies.

There was no Q & A Afterward, but I would have liked to seen one.
