Catherine Chooses Island Life for her Children
Hello! Magazine ^ | 12/19/2002

Catherine Zeta-Jones and husband Michael Douglas have decided to send their children to school in Bermuda.

It had earlier been reported that Swansea-born Catherine wanted them to attend the private Llandovery College in west Wales, but the couple have announced that two-year-old Dylan and their new baby, due in April, will be educated on the Caribbean island where Michael has family.

“We have a house in Bermuda, Michael’s mother is Bermudan and our children will be schooled there,” said Catherine. “When we arrive we have an instant family and friends. It’s a very close-knit world and extremely private. Dylan loves it because he has plenty of cousins and playmates.”

The 33-year-old and her husband are currently renovating a mansion on the island, where Michael also owns a luxury resort with 47 villas. They say they’ll keep in touch with the children by video-conference when they’re away in Los Angeles.

The tiny British colony has one of the highest standards of living in the world and is a favourite hideaway for the rich and powerful. David Bowie rents a property on the island and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi also owns a home there. The Douglas family, meanwhile, has links with the territory going back some 400 years.

But they want everyone else to support their public schools. Do as I say, not as I do.

Does anyone honestly care?

See keywords Dowd and Maureen Dowd. There is a reason for them.

Huh? Let's see, Michael Douglas' grandfather was a ragman who immigrated to the USA from Eastern Europe. So how does this give the Douglas family links to Bermuda going back 400 years?

I'm afraid I don't follow the hoi-polloi that much. Is this the broad that does the cell phone commercials where everyone "freezes"?

Dunno, 'cuz I killed my TV ages ago. The point of this post, and others like it, is "eat your heart out, Maureen Dowd."

It's a deal. Which of the 5,000 Trent Lott threads would you suggest?

;-)

This is interesting. I lived in Bermuda for several years in the mid-80's as an ex-pat.

Bermuda has a resident population of about 50,000 people living on 21 sq miles of small islands. They have a few schools consistent with a population of that size, and they brag about them to anyone who will listen.

However, most of the ex-pats, and others who could afford to do so, sent their children off-island because the Bermuda schools really did not provide a good education, in spite of their claims to the contrary. One family who did send their child to the best schools in Bermuda had to provide extensive remedial training for him when they subsequently returned to the US during his late elementary school years.

It seems that the Douglases have put appearance over substance once again. but then again, what else can one expect.

>Gotta love those liberals.

Bermuda planation owners. Cool. But Trent Lott couldn't get away with that.

The point, as I see it, is the Douglas's kids will be safe & well cared for, by someone else, while they are free to come & go as they please. They can always be tutored.

Since when did Bermuda drift south to the Caribbean? The author of this article should get an atlas for Christmas.

Sometimes, not often, if the parents are a-holes the child will learn from nannys and tutors for the better.

Case in point, Winston Churchill.

His pop croaked from syph and his mom was a woman of easy virtue.

They never liked Sir Winston all that much... but oh, did he achieve!

A fellow student from Bermuda was in one of my classes several years ago. She said the schools were good, but... Kids had to take tests to get into them, so the best schools were very good, but not available to the entire population. And students had to live there; leave home, parents and live at the school. This young lady was a good enough student among her class mates, but no thanks, I'm not packing my children away to live at a public school!

This is so very special. If only I could have felt the warmth and love of my parents through video conferencing. My life would have been complete.
