I guess my childhood in rural Tenn. during the Depression years made me intolerant of selfishness. People don't know what deprivation is these days in America.

Molly! I was waiting for you to be here so I could tell you how much I enjoyed your contribution to this thread. This may be the best one yet (but I say that every day).

It must be something in growing up during that time and in that place. My dad grew up during the depression, he was born in 1932, the beginning of the depression, in east Tennessee. He, too, cannot tolerate selfishness.

Oh, Nan. That is beautiful! Thanks for sharing that memory with all of us. I wish the children of today...more of them....knew the value of such memories. It is what gives fiber and strength of character to people. My sister also kept her very first dolls, although they had no fingers because she had this obnoxious little sister who managed to cut them off at some point! :( (me)! My only excuse is that I was very much younger.

I can remember wanting a little table and chair set when I was little. I remember seeing a flat large package under the tree and I knew that must be it! And it was! Oh, what I would give to still have that today. But the memory will be there forever.

Hi Pippin. Thanks for the memories of Tenn.

I do remember those old pumps used in the country, (North, South, wherever) to get water. Whenever we visited Grandma, my brothers and I would fight over whose turn it was to pump. Not to get out of pumping, but because we all wanted to pump.

So good to finally see you again Pippin. We missed ya on Monday. Wonderful Christmas vignette about your memorable first Christmas as a server. I thought you were going to say that the snowstorm kept everyone from Church so there was no one there to serve! But it went in another direction.

Have you seen the Two Towers movie yet?

Aquamarine asked me to extend her apologies for not being here. She and Mr. Aqua left early this a.m. to spend the day and evening in Gatlinburg TN and won't be back till noon tomorrow. They are going to visit Aqua's favorite art gallery there and possibly purchase a new picture for Christmas. I am sure Gatlinburg is a Place in the Heart of many.

Lodwick, if Aqua were here, I just bet she would be playing Galveston by Glenn Campbell and Country Roads by John Denver...(shameless hint, ha ha)

obnoxious little sister who managed to cut them off at some point!

LOL. You know, the funny thing is that my obnoxious brother, Bill, in a fit of anger the next spring, grabbed my dolls away from me and tossed them into the flooded creek water. I never saw them again and it broke my heart. I never stopped looking for them whenever I returned to that place, even as I became an adult. I kept thinking I would somehow find them, but I never did. They live on in my memory as the best gift I ever received.
