Maybe or maybe not, but how would you know? You didn't live among them or eat at the same restaurants or go to the same schools or anything. And they didn't air their dirty laundry in public. I didn't live in the south, if that's what you mean. I went to school with them; they didn't go to a lot of restaurants when I was growing up; I worked with them where they only could have certain jobs unless it was the government. But you are right, I never lived in a neighborhood with them, other than a few.
Maybe their laundry wasn't so dirty compared to some of ours. They were usually too scared to do much of anything other than keep as low a profile as possible.
I feel reasonably confident that if I could go back to that time and was very poor, I could have safely lived in an all-black community in the south. I wouldn't have been in any particular danger from anyone other than the whites of that time. I do have one black friend and the reaction of various whites during our friendship has been strange. Neighbor husband didn't want her in his house; the lady didn't mind until her husband put his foot down. I learned a lot from that lady about myself.

Back then, black folk grinned really wide, and shuffled and bobbed and said, "Yas'm!" and "Yassir!" They stayed far away from good white folk, and if they had to come near white folk's houses, they came and scratched at the back door.
I'm sure you felt it was a better time.
Too bad for you that time marches on.

Alas, Few of Those Who Study "Black Culture" attempt to understand the Utterly Destructive "Entitlement Philosophy" Sociopathology the Black American culture has been Brainwashed with over the past 40+years!
There is NO REASON that an Amrican Black Person cannot succeed in America!
There are Plenty Of successful Black Businesses to Prove This Point!!

I'm inclined to live on top of my mountain no matter what...the only house I can see is mine, and that's fine by me.

A Trent Lott supporter thread is developing. No wonder the race pimps have jobs.

I found crime in many low income neighboorhoods of all colors and decided to attain higher income status and leave the 'hoods altogether.

I wonder what the racial makeup of Jesse Jackson's neighborhood is.

"...it obviously comes from their insecurities and the fact that their experiences are so limited with people from other racial and ethnic groups." That or they've been watching the evening news and looking at FBI crime statistics.

It's not the color of the skin, it's the culture they have adopted. I agree completely. I'd also be interested in knowing how many people just refused to answer the questions or said that they didn't have enough information. If people gave either of those responses, were their responses eliminated from the survey?
If my neighborhood suddenly became filled with people who seemed to represent a criminal element, I would be tempted to move regardless of their skin color. Likewise, having blacks move into the neighborhood wouldn't bother me as long as they were good neighbors. It's unfortunate that many people in big cities have come to regard blacks as a people group with a higher crime rate, but the issues go far beyond skin color.

I found crime in many low income neighboorhoods of all colors and decided to attain higher income status and leave the 'hoods altogether. That's certainly been my experience, too. The neighborhoods to avoid are the ones where the majority of families are headed by single mothers, with few job-holding adult males anywhere near. Unfortunately, that describes a lot of inner city Black neighborhoods. When I lived in the city, that would have been my mental image if I had been asked if I would live in a Black neighborhood.
But now I live in the suburbs. There are occasional female headed families, but there are also plenty of men around. There's discipline on the streets and in the schools. And all races live here. No one really keeps track of what % are Black. The houses are mostly well cared for, and there are few bad kids - and those aren't necessarily the Black ones.

"It is embarrassing for many whites who have these opinions and it obviously comes from their insecurities and the fact that their experiences are so limited with people from other racial and ethnic groups." Or maybe it's because they've had all the interesting multicultural experiences they can stand. I grew up in a racially mixed neighborhood, and here's a brief summary of my experiences:
- My father was a teacher who worked his whole life in the core. His career ended the night he was chaperoning a high school dance; he ejected some rowdy young black men from the dance and they came back and did a drive-by on his office.
- My wife made the mistake of being a white woman waiting alone at a bus stop after dark. She was dragged into an alley, beaten, and gang-raped by four young black men. Despite her screams, none of the neighbors saw or heard anything.
- My daughter was sexually assaulted in her public school by a young black man. The principal (a black woman) seemed more concerned with keeping it out of the news than in helping my daughter or discouraging her assailant.
- My other daughter came home from school with an exciting story about a new drill the teachers had held that day: "drive by." When the playground supervisor blew a whistle, the kids all hit the dirt until the teacher sounded all clear. This was the city and the school's innovative response to the three drive-by shootings that had strafed the playground that spring.
- They say a conservative is a liberal who's been mugged. I used to be a liberal. Now I'm a conservative. You figure it out.
My point is, given that the black community seems either unwilling or unable to control the feral behavior of their sons, why
should any sane white person stick around? I did, and I was a fool to do so.

My experiences with "... people from other racial and ethnic groups." are not limited at all. This is not embarrasing. It's called white flight and it's fairly common where I'm from. I'm not insecure with the fact that there are problems in certain areas of the city because of "... people from other racial and ethnic groups." Because I want no part of it. That is exactly why I am moving away from there. No problem with that at all. Who would be expected to raise your children around that? Give me a break Dan Krichbaum. What are YOU trying to say? You are welcome to live where I do. Please feel free to move on in.

"Of course, I wouldn't want to live around a bunch of white people with similar attitudes and values, either."
Did I just say ditto ?

Thank You!
To: yankeedame
I haven't yet read this thread yet, but on the general topic, I must confess that I neither want to live in or near a black community, as I do, nor do I want to live around a poor mixed community. I am not a racist, but it's my belief that ideology is what makes differences among people. It's clear that upwardly mobile people of color don't want to live in poor or black communities. They vote with their feet.
The truth is that when upwardly mobile African Amercans move into white neighborhoods, people can't tell the difference between them and predators from the poorer black neighborhoods who commit crimes, so the whites move out, which is known as "white flight". Many others, including all other groups, retreat to other neighborhoods, so that they don't have to deal with it.
Does anyone have any realistic suggestions for solutions to this problem?
Or am I supposed to accept crime as a result of color and not culture?
I believe, and quite rightfully so, I believe, that it is a matter of CULTURE and NOT race which is driving this issue.
To: yankeedame
Most middle class black people also do not want to live in the poor black neighborhoods where the street ethic of violence and ignorance rules. They are quite happy to get the hell out ASAP. Why doesn't the author interview them?
Don't put this one white racism. Its just common sense trying to protect the safety of your house and its value.
Once the BS crowd of the wiseguys and players move in, the police tend to have a hands off attitude toward enforcing the law and the area goes downhill quickly.
