What say did you have in the election of Lott to the SML position?

No more than any other Republican in the country. Our Senators aren't exactly tuned in to what rank and filers are thinking most generally, nor do they seem to care until they feel threatened in some way.

But I certainly expressed my opposition to Lott's obviously failed leadership in my own circles, including here on FR.

How about you? Were you supportive of his election as ML?

TLBSHOW:

The Republican platform is that of not supporting affirmative action. In its simplest terms is racist. When Lott said he fully supports this, he is failing the republican platform and doesnt deserve leadership. he should be challenged and defeated in the ML. He has failed us, he should go.

The only way...blacks will give him pass now...if he says he is for "reparations"..

That is the most racist thing that I have seen on this thread. Do you think they don't care about anything but reparations? You don't think they care whether they have good schools, decent jobs and a community with little or no crime? That is unbelievable to me. Then all I hear is how racist Trent Lott is suppose to be.

"Then throw him out over that(stupidity) instead of labelling him a racist."

You sure are preoccupied with denying racism. Get all het up at the very suggestion.

Why is it so important to you to deny it at all costs, even when it is a totally plausible explanation? hmmm?

"But I don't think anything wants him to zip his lip .. just that he doesn't put his foot in his mouth."

I would like him to zip his lip for the next few weeks, because EVERY TIME he's opened his mouth this week he puts his foot in it.

Wait'll you get hear the part where he seems to be promising pork goodies ALL OVER America if they'll just forgive him and make nice now. It must be on again by now...it's midnight.

Come to think of it, I'm glad I'm almost done with this thread...no WONDER my brain is getting fried!

My wife, who is still a registered democrat, (but feasts on a diet of Savage and Dr. Laura), put it succiently.

Why, she asks, did not Lott in the very first days put an end to this. All he had to say was He was sorry for the comment, it was just a birthday thingie for an old man an if you read anything else into it, well, tough...

My addition would be to call all the leftists and their agenda to the carpet...

Are you a racist?

Are you fixated?

Are you a broken record?

If Lott took the lead in reparations, he would be the black caucus' best friend. That isnt racists, its the truth.

Now, I think all involved look foolish, and the WH is now distancing itself from it all. That is the smart move. It isn't Lott's remarks that have made Republicans look dumb. It's Republicans who've made Republicans look dumb.

I respectfully disagree with this. The WH kept its distance until Lott's mishandling--i.e. blowing off handling--of this event started to be used to paint the party as a whole. The hand of the WH was forced by the recalcitrant Lott and his "forgetting" to denounce segregation on LKL.

The republicans have made clear they do NOT stand shoulder to shoulder with the impression Lott has left of the views he may have. You see, Lott never successfully answered the charge being made against him. I had fully expected him to and when first I heard this story I thought it was a mountain being made of a molehill. Now in tonight's interview he has raised new questions in my mind on his standing regarding the race issue, in light of his embrace of AA and saying the fact he has employed minorities is proof he has used it--I find that staggering.

President Bush had to make his statement and I am sure he is furious at the position he AND our party have been placed in by one person and one person alone. Trent Lott.

"Your reading the same thread I am. All the 'real conservatives' who say Lott must go...what will the 'rats, media, and their supporters on the liberal plantation say about us if we don't do something? He has become a liability to the party...but just don't quit the Senate Lott."

No wonder I don't understand your reference to 'appeasement'...your rant makes no sense. Lott's the one appeasing.

The exact quote, from Drudge: "I'm not sure we in America, certainly not white America, people in the South, fully understood who this man was, the impact he has had on the fabric of this country."

Tone-deaf and blinkered. And not just lately, but for a while now.

Get ready to pass that Majority Leader plaque on to your successor, Trent.

Well after viewing that interview, that might be good advice for Lott .. he didn't help himself tonight

That's a lot (no pun intended) of hyperbole. We don't hate Lott, well, at least I don't hate Lott, but we hate that he just keeps digging his own grave.

We must do what is best to advance the conservative agenda, don't you agree? Lott is not in the best position to advance that agenda and could very well endanger our future, short-term if he prematurely leaves the senate, and long-term if he remains as SML and continues to be the poster-child of the GOP and target-practice for the left.

Don't let the ratty rat rats have their whipping boy at their disposal.

So you want us to grovel in fear before Carville?

That is exactly what I don't want anyone to do! Do you really think that Carville didn't have anything to do with this? Because the fact is that he did, so says Lloyd Grove of The Washington Post(who isn't exactly a right-wing kook).

Last Thursday night, on Channel 4 news in New York, a reporter was doing "man on the street" interviews in Manhattan.

Not one person said that Lott should step down.

Every one said that what Lott said was "stupid" or "dumb" or "insensitive", but that he apologized and that should be that. It was a "diverse" group of people who were interviewed. The majority were black.

One woman, who identified herself as a "life-long liberal" and looked like the last hippie to leave Woodstock, said that this was a distraction, and that the country had "way more important things to do than to have a battle over a dumb comment".

I repeat. This was in MANHATTAN.

Once again Washington is operating in it's very own echo chamber.
