Against. The principle was - probably - meant well, but any program which offers special priviledge for some in the name of equal opportunity for all is a sham which lessens all of America.

Not unless you disqualify the entire group of Washington politicians. So, who is left? Hillary Clinton? No one will touch her because they are afraid of her and her mouthpiece. This is where paying attention to the race-baiters have gotten us. Want to keep playing?

I don't think we would have abandoned Lott if he would have handled this better. We didn't after the impeachment deal, although some here will never forgive him, we didn't abandon him after the power sharing fiasco, we still didn't abandon him after he allowed Jeffords to defect without warning, we didn't even abandon him after the election when he stated he was going to dismiss the senate without voting on Homeland Security. The man does not have the political skill to do the job. This final incident just proved it to those of us who were long suffering.

Yes, the race baiting will continue but with a good strategy session it may well be turned back on the dems. We don't really have a choice now do we? Had Lott handled this well it wouldn't be happening. The race baiting would continue whether Lott remains or leaves. HE gave them the opening.

Lott isn't the standard bearer.Bush is.Bush will call the shots.The WH has the agenda and Bush needs a man in the Senate to get his stuff passed.The indications so far are that Lott is the best person for the job.If he isn't, then he can be voted out.

Lott is not the Co-President.He is the guy to make the sausage.If he makes it well, he is being a "leader".

I didn't see the show, but if Lott endorsed affirmative action to try to convince the BET crowd to let him stay on, then I will withdraw my support of him.

I've felt all along that his comment at the birthday party was just something to make old Strom feel good. He shouldn't have apologized for a that remark, because no one but a PC junkie would get their panties in a twist over it. He did apologize, which was a huge mistake.

Caving in on affirmative action is fatal. It is as outrageous for him to cave in on that issue as it was for people to get angry over his comments or his positions on integration 40 years ago.

This has been a very disheartening week which could have been saved by a little backbone. Many Republicans just don't have it when charged with "racism". The PC destruction machine is now in full force. The Democrats are laughing hysterically at conservatives who joined in on their anti-Lott bandwagon, leading to the spectacle tonight of Lott, like Winston Smith, joining the herd that has been out to get him.

This has been one of the most shameful displays of moral cowardice in Republican history. And it'll happen again and again. PC took one giant leap forward this week.

But since you brought up Alan...who do you think would have come out looking like a whipped puppy if it had been Dr. Keyes taking on the panel on BET tonight? Would he have come out of that studio stripped of all dignity and having conceded most of the principles of the party he was leading?

The only truthful answer anyone could give to that question is no...the panelists would have been the ones slinking away in shame...and the listeners would have gotten an education on what the true issues are that face blacks AND whites in this country.

So knock it off with what you think is some kind of slur by attaching me to Alan in every post you ever bother to post to me. He's far more of a man than your hero Trent Lott will ever be, and I'm proud to call him my friend...no matter what you think.

I can also post about ten other quotes from people who have said many things that are WORSE than that. I have no idea if they are racist but their words certainly seem to point in that direction. None of them are in the Republican Party.

Lott has had my support up until tonight, Maybe he will change my mind, I will remain open to that possibility, But his performance tonight on BET could only be described as a complete and total sellout of his core beliefs. It's one thing to be willing to apologize for your mistakes and ask people to forgive you, But it's another to abandon you principles in order to get it

Good point, FReepers cannot see the big picture of what they are buying into. ALL white people are racist just because they may have had ancestors who were or held slaves once. But that's ok, it's the priciple we are fighting for, right ?
