About as ironic as the concept of a "Congressional BLACK Caucus"

How to solve this Trent Loss mess

Trent Lott does not want to go from being the majority leader to being a pariah sitting on the back bench of the senate. Understandable. His name has become mud in Washington.

But back home, I am sure he's still popular. In fact, he may be something of a martyr. Well, there's a governor's race in Mississippi this year. Lott can stand down as majority leader and run for governor.

Haley Barbour is the current GOP front runner. But Lott can get Barbour to stand down by offering to appoint him to the Senate.

Everyone's happy.

Brit Hume reported that he said that the South has a problem with racism and that he is trying to change.

Actually, I don't think he said that at all. Why don't you wait until the show is broadcast, then you won't have to post from memory?

Not Rick. The job requires a smoothie and someone who can cut deals. It's not pretty being Majority Leader, and is it any wonder so few can do the job? You have to be both a parliamentarian, in knowing the rules, and a fixer.A fixer can't really run for POTUS, so that nixes a few more ambitious souls, and what you are left with is a dog's breakkie...

Are you crazy?

Wait until we see the show when we can speculate a lot more freely now?

Actually, I don't remember Brit's exact words, but I do know I wasn't too happy with what Lott was saying (according to Brit, who had apparently seen a transcript)

You might be right in your assessment of Santorum....I think he could do the job effectively, and he's rumored to want it......but the point of my comment was, given the four possible choices...would the GOP avoid picking another southerner.....that's why I think it'll be Santorum..

Daschle was a smoothie and a fixer?

Well, he fixed it so none of Bush's nominees got through, that's for sure.

Question for you.....would the GOP choose a new SML from a southern state?.....I think not....LOtt's a goner....but it won't be Frist, Nichols, or McConnell....it'll be Santorum....on the merits, and also geography..

Yeah. Cause even some in our own party think we rednecks ain't nuthin' but a bunch of sheet-wearin' racists.

Attitudes like yours are NOT helpful to the Republican Party.

Actually, I like this solution - he can keep his Senate seat while he runs for governor, then appoint Haley to take his spot - elegant, and if the national Republican Party agrees to quietly help finance the campaign, it could be a win for all sides!

Forgive me for asking, but why is Lott doing this? More importantly, why should Republicans even care that 78% of blacks think Lott should step down?

Let's say that he has his epiphany on BET, confesses his sins, flagellates himself in public, promises to support affirmative action, vows to work for slavery reparations, and ends his sorry performance by getting down on his weak white knees and kissing Jesse Jackson's black behind on live TV. What will this change?

Will black churches open their doors and loan their busses to Republican candidates? Will black leaders stop calling Clarence Thomas an Uncle Tom? Will the next J.C. Watts (if there is one) be admitted to the Congressional Black Caucus? Is there any act of contrition that a Republican can perform that will convince a majority of urban black voters to forsake the Democratic Party?

The answer is, probably not. Therefore, why should Republicans care what black people think?

According to Lucianne.com headline, Trent Vacant Lott favors affirmative action. He throws the conservative keystone of a colorblind society to save his own sorry ass.

What an insufferable idiot. Initially, I wanted him merely to step down as ML. Now I want his friggin backstabbing unprincipled sycophantic head on a pike!

Ken, I think Ambrose meant that Lott would remain in the Senate while running for governor - which would take Ronnie Musgrove out of the equation (assuming Lott won.)

Was Daschle a success? Hardly....He has a tin ear and had to play smash mouth all the time because, that's who he is.It didn't help him, did it?
