Most Freepers praised Chritopher Hitchens for breaking ranks from the left when he attacked Clinton as well as supporting W on Iraq and Afghanistan. And thankfully most conservative commentators and freepers can think indepently as well about this issue as well.

I'm not "lambasting" Lott for his comment at Strom's birthday party. I'm questioning his ability to lead the Republican party because of the way he has handled himself during this crisis. His last straw with me is when he said he was "FOR" Affirmative Action. Was his voting record a lie or was his remarks on BET a lie? either way he has shown he is not capable of leading the Republican Party because of the way he has handled the mess HE got himself into

After Lott sold his soul....the rep from the CBC just said he didn't go far enough.

Depressing week....I hear ya...I've been so upset over this and back an forth with my opinion....all I know is that I am so tired of working for the GOP(getting out the vote, campaigning) to win back the majority of the Senate, only to lose it once and maybe on the verge of losing it again....being done in by our own Repub Senators......sigh!

Sorry- I'm terrible at reporting what politicians say.
Anyway...I'll give my impressions.

Typical politician-interviewer-show IMO. He did grovel some, he ducked a lot, he apologized a lot.

The "now I'm for affirmative action" quote is the only significant policy remark.
Supported judge Pickering although the interviewer tried very hard to get him to say otherwise.
Said as Maj. L. he would get legislation through that helped blacks and all minorities.
The interviewer didn't cross the line into being too harsh- frankly, I had hoped he would.

He came off as a politician trying to mend fences- successfully IMO.

Is the only qualification for being the leader in the senate to "not be a racist" Ok, I concede (though I don't really know) that Trent Lott is NOT a racist, but I don't find him the most qualified to carry the banner on the matters I consider important. He dosen't have a RIGHT to that job.

My democrat sister whom I have had words with about foreign policy just called me to make SURE I watch this show. She made a special effort to watch the initial airing, and was chortling with glee.

I am not a happy person. I have read this thread and just as I surmised, Lott has made things exponentially worse.

Someone with some clout needs to take him aside, convince him to resign and run a committee that sends money to Mississippi, and inspire him with his new role as the self-sacrificing savior of the party.

And I have one more question: whose idea was it to get him on BET? Would it be that weasel Dick Morris's idea? I would really like to know.

I didnt see Trent tonight so surely that qualifies me to comment...If you read or listen to the original comment Lott was attempting to stand up for Strom and his state of Mississippi, and once he had said Mississippi voted for Strom and he was proud he had no where left to go.It would have sounded insulting to say Mississippi voted for Strom and we are proud of it but thank God the rest of the Country was smarter than us....I think to get out of this box he just forgot himself and said what he could have said in some parts of his state in the 60s and 70s with no one batting an eye. It would be nice if we as a country were beyond all this but clearly we arent.
