Maybe not. He didn't totally buckle on Pickering. I was getting worried that Lott might totally collapse and declare Pickering unfit for the USSC. In a flash of courage he defended Pickering.

I agree that affirmative action in this limited sense is not a bad thing. I don't think that Lott understands such nuances, however.

Yes of course. The original meaning of AA has long been dead, and that is not the way the word is used in commerce. It is a euphemism for quotas, sometimes by complex structures to hide that, as you well know. But when the conservatives in the Senate revolt, Lott can say he meant the former meaning, and then BET says Lott lied to them, and then Lott says well he didn't mean too, and maybe he would favor the new meaning if that was the only way to prevent it all being whiter and white, and well it just goes on and on. Poor Lott, he is sort of like ClLinton now, but about 30 IQ points short, and simply can't pull this sort of thing off. It is sort of like Paul McCartny trying to write an opera (whidh he in fact tried) rather than rocks songs.

Lott is gonna have to do some steppin' alright. I think he did well for himself tonight.

As far as getting out our checkbooks, that won't be a problem- Dem black patronage programs run by Dem party operatives are going to be turned into Republican black patronage programs run by Republican Party operatives.
Having Republicans run the patronage will mean a huge dent in the Dem black vote.
That's just good politics and with Republican control of the branches that's what was going to happen anyway. It doesn't require any new money.
