100 percent agree. Get rid of him (as SML).

FoxNews is reporting that Lott is trying to align himself with several civil rights advocates/groups. Looks like he's going to become the cheerleader-in-chief for civil rights (aka save his a$$, save his job).

I believe I heard him specify "my state"; in such case, he's toast at home.

Bad mistake to address black Americans specifically. Lott's only hope was to issue his apologies, keep his mouth shut, let his defenders defend him and then hope the whole thing would blow over or that something big would crowd this issue off the the front pages. Instead he keeps on stirring the pot. I'm not addressing the basic issues here, just remarking upon his stupid tactics which are adding insult to injury and will never work with the ravening white socialist Dem leaders out to get his blood in order to re-take the senate.

It's my sense that the black community as a whole doesn't give as much a hoot about this as does Jesse Jackson, Tom Daschle & company.

I like your attitude.

And, yes, Freepers can be their own worst enemies.

But what more can be done on the civil rights front? I can't think of anything I want to be put into law that isn't already into law.

I just see Lott as bending over backwards to the point where he would support bad legislation to prove something.

You don't agree?

With all due respect, I think you are being really unfair to Rove. The news has reported for days that the White House has remained silent on the Lott mess. If there was something they could hang on Rove, the media would have gleefully done so.

I heard that the singing Senator is going to peform a song on BET... It goes something like this...

You are black, and I am white
Life's an Eskimo Pie, let's…take a bite!
That was groovy thinkin'
Lincoln, when you set them freeee...

We all know
Cats are the same
Maine to Mexico.
Good. Bad.
Guys and chicks!"
I am dark, and you are light. You are blind as a bat, and I have sight!

You are black, I am white, and who cares!!

I can almost hear what he is about to say:

"In the past few days, in light of my insensitive remarks, I can see that race is still a deeply divisive issue in our beloved country.

"As such, I have pledged myself as a lawmaker and a man of principle to bind these wounds, so that the last vestiges of a shameful era in our history can be put to rest.

"I have previously opposed affirmative action out of the conviction that it did more harm than good. In light of what I have learned about the sensitivity of race relations in this country, I have come to the conclusion they do more good than harm. Therefore, I am forced to rescind my opposition to affirmative action, and will work with my fellow Republicans to make sure its provisions remain in place. I am sure that they have learned lessons too from this unfortunate episode, and will be equally as committed to finding solutions to its underlying causes as I am. I feel certain too, that our great President, President Bush, will also see the wisdom of this in the coming days.

"There are no words that can truly express my regret for the pain I have caused. Yet I believe my apology can mark the beginning to a new relationship between the Republican Party and issues of race relations - so therefore I say it, I am sorry for any hurt or offense I have caused."

This assumes Lott would be wanting to create the maximum amount of damage with this speech.

Regards, Ivan

Scorched-earth threatening Lott tries to cave to non-essential Dems just when Republicans are disgusted with his selfishness, neglecting even the party.

Question for you.....would the GOP choose a new SML from a southern state?.....I think not....LOtt's a goner....but it won't be Frist, Nichols, or McConnell....it'll be Santorum....on the merits, and also geography..

Does anyone else see the irony in Lott going on BLACK Entertainment Television to apologize for making remarks that could be construed as segregationist?

Does anyone else find it insulting that Lott could think that all black people watch BET.

Lott's being forced to dance, by the black establishment and some rabid conservatives.

You actually think Trent Lott would go on BET unless he thought it would do some good?

This is disgusting to watch, but my reasons for finding it disgusting are likely different from yours.
