Lott is too much of a liability to be Majority Leader, but not such a liability we need to sacrifice a majority in the Senate.

So did your math take into account that if Lott does resign, he will resign PERIOD?

What more perfect revenge on the sleazebags like you who ginned up this "RACIST!!! RACIST!!! RACIST!!!" smear so you could get somebody in as majority leader you like better.

Conveniently enough, your high moral standards dicate that Trent is too big a racist to remain as leader, but they are flexible enough to allow a RACIST RACIST RACIST to remain in office to preserve your majority.

If you win, Trent will resign from the Senate, and once again the STUPID PARTY will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Good post. Self righteous indignation seems to have no limits on this forum anymore.

There are only a handful of honest FReepers left on this friggin race issue. The rest are self virtue enriching fools who are stumbling all over themselves to empower our foes and prove how racially sensitive they are.

It's a spectacle.

Not according to Lott.

Lott, for his part, distanced himself from the threat—even as aides still were making it on his behalf. “My term runs through 2006,” he told NEWSWEEK. “I intend to serve it, whatever happens.”

Nothing was ginned up.

Lott's scripted Dixiecrat homage drew adible gasps and no applause at Thurmond's centenary. No one made him babble such nonsense. After several late and bumbling attempts at apologies, Lott was instructed by President Bush to disavow segregation on Larry King Live... and didn't do it. That lead to Bush's rebuke in Philadelphia, which fineally spurred Lott to say what never should have needed saying (but for his own stupidity) in the first place, that segregation was bad.

Time and again the man threw himself in from of onrushing trains. It's a singularly memorable self-destruction, one for the books.

Conveniently enough for me, your reliance on caps doesn't obscure your straw man argument. I've never said Lott was a racist.

If you win, Trent will resign from the Senate, and once again the STUPID PARTY will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Well, he's said he wouldn't resign, hasn't he? And why would you think I would submit to blackmail anyway?

I don't fault those who are sticking by Lott, but the stupidity has truly been his alone. He's got four years left, and he intends to serve them. Let's hope he snaps out of it.

It's interesting how these people think, isn't it? They don't like Lott for other reasons so they find a perfect excuse to get rid of him. To hear em say it, it's like: "Let's run Lott out of his ML position under our cries of RACISM and, let's see, Oh Yeah, that's right, we still need Lott for our senate majority so maybe we can toss a few bones his way after we get done with his character assassination and get him to enthusiastically accept his new role as a disgraced senator, ready and willing to help with the Bush Agenda.” “What a brilliant plan!"

If you win, Trent will resign from the Senate, and once again the STUPID PARTY will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

You Bet. That is a very real possibility. I believe this is only now beginning to dawn on this hysterical mob of self-destructing republicans. The way I see it, this incredible exhibition of republican suicide only became an unmitigated disaster when Bush, instead of acting like a leader, chose to pour gasoline on this smoldering fire with his highly charged PC rhetoric. Absent that, this controversy would have quickly burned out on its own. I really don't know why Bush couldn't have said something to the effect that he believes Lott's remarks were taken WAY OUT OF CONTEXT (which they were) and that this is politics of personal destruction of the worst kind.

Since Bush took the easy, cushy PC route it makes me wonder if this is not payback for Lott’s recent comments that he is for putting our military on the border and perhaps a few other issues that he is at odds with Bush on. I also wonder if Bush seriously ever thought of the consequences that his remarks might have on the control of the senate.
