Some people get all bent out of shape whenever Bush, as President of a country that guarantees religious freedom, show respect for other faiths.
That article claiming Bush is an idol worshipper is just so petty and small minded.

You're trying to change the subject. You were painting either Senator Nickles or me (it isn't clear from your post) with the Ross Perot brush, saying that because Perot used to use that expression anyone else who uses it is just like Perot.

That is illogical, simple-minded, and deserving of a return flame.

One letter, dated Nov. 17, 1969, and marked with Mr. Lott's initial as its author, is addressed to "My dear Laura," a woman who agreed with Mr. Colmer's position against the Voting Rights Act. Mr. Lott laments that like-minded Southerners are simply outvoted, and "cannot stop the enactment of legislation undully favorable to the Negro race any more than we can prevent the Supreme Court from issuing decrees inimical to the Constitution."

Another letter writer, Justeen Strange, wrote angrily in July 1969 that "Mississippi is no more, thanks to our politicians, we are slaves to the gorilla race, our proud white race is now in servitude to the NAACP jews and negroes."

Mr. Lott, above Mr. Colmer's signature, politely replied that he was "not insulted" by Ms. Strange's letter. "I was just disappointed that you were not more appreciative of my efforts in behalf of sound government and against the things you complained of."

Why didn't Lott seek support from Shirley Temple Black?

Good. Sound fellow.

Lott should recall how he behaved during impeachment - his idiocy and mendacity has finally come back to haunt him. Had he been a man of principle, I dare say conservatives would have fought like tigers to save him. As he betrayed the most important cause that ever came his way, his support is tepid at best. Just so.

Regards, Ivan

Its a double standard and even Blacks know it. Byrd was fourth in line for the Presidency and didn't utter a word in disgust in relation to what he said. But now that's it a Republican we have principles at stake?

I never understood why the Republican party has its "principles" to think about but the Democrat party doesn't.

What really ticks me off is some here blaming President Bush instead of Lott! The President came out and said clearly that Lott's remarks were offensive and wrong and that the Republican Party did not agree. I watched him and I stood up and applauded him. When I saw TLBSHOW call President Bush "two-faced", it was almost more than I could stand. I just moved on to the next post so I wouldn't say something I would regret.

I've thought for some time now that the only good way out of this would be for Lott himself to stand up and do something very LARGE. Something self-sacrificing. I would raise his stature greatly -- amongst Republicans (who really don't like him very much for other reasons) and amongst the great a-political American masses (who admire self-sacrifice for a greater cause above most anything).

The GOOD solution is in Lott's hands -- voluntarily step down from leadership and become one-of-the-majority, one with a great deal of seniority.

But this would require self-sacrifice on Lott's part, an act for the greater good, the larger agenda that he has been talking about since this broke.

It would be an act that would be seen as all as the answer to Clintonism -- the anti-Clinton -- "it's all about ME." It's there for him. But the rule of the road today is that honor is for suckers. Especially true in the U.S. Senate, I'm afraid.

I'm not counting on it.

As much as you hate to think it, Lott may just have to get a vote or two from a Jeffords to get some items passed, and that would piss you off, wouldn't it? I guess that would make him weak.

If he does what Gingrich and Livingston did then he'll resign from the Senate.

I had the same impression. I wonder what changed? Or have Senator Nickles' statements been mis-interpreted?

"No, but we might get far less than 9% if he stays now."

If not this then they will find something else to make claims over... Why should we live in fear about being labelled something we aren't? I'd rather lose elections if this is the case.

Amen, Jorge. I'm a Christian and I was not offended. Robertson and Fallwell get carried away sometimes. We are NOT against all Muslims, just the terrorists. All Muslims are not terrorists. I am sick of the constant Bush-bashing on FR. He has been an outstanding President and most freepers know that.

No, it's one thing to play politics, it's another to publicly pander to someone who stabbed you in the back. It shows a lack of self esteem on Lott's part. He should make Jeffords court him, he IS, after all, the Senate Majority Leader. He is afraid however to act like it. Jeffords gets nothing in the Senate without his say-so, and he doesn't need to kiss that Judas' ass.

Back at home, the turmoil at Ole Miss was roiling Pascagoula and even Mr. Lott's family. Ira Harkey Jr., editor of The Pascagoula Chronicle, was writing editorials denouncing racial violence and criticizing Barnett for fighting the integration of Ole Miss. In response, a group of local people — many of them shipyard workers, Mr. Harkey says — harassed him for months, threatening violence and even shooting out his office windows.

Some time later, Mr. Harkey said, he received a letter from a woman who told him that if he did not publish her letter it would prove "you are truly an integrationist and I hope you not only get a hole through your office door but through your stupid head." It was signed Iona W. Lott — Mr. Lott's mother.

"I called her, asked if she'd sent it to me, and she said she certainly had sent it to me and she meant every word," said Mr. Harkey, now 84.

"Shiver"

Guess I'll hit the Malox and watch him. After all, I suffered through Gore on SNL. Is it possible to experience revulsion, disgust, and pity at the same time?
