Senator Nickles wouldn't have made this bold move without first counting votes.

Yes he would. He does this kind of stuff all the time. He was one of the first and only Republican Senators to call for Clinton's resignation. Many GOP Senators may have had the same idea, but they weren't dumb enough to state it before they gauged the sentiment of the country.

It looks like he will be the incoming Senate Majority Leader.

If he was going to be Majority Leader, it would have happened by now. This little stunt kills it for him.

You obviously don't know him. Senator Nickles always measures twice, cuts once.

We'll see, won't we?

Sen. Rick Santorum would be an excellent majority leader.

He is young, articulate, steadfast, and able to pull from all factions in this magnificant country.

If Lott has shown ANY cajones in the past, Republicans would be lined up in support, and this would be over. He didn't, and now he suffers from his OWN weakness.

Exactly right. Trent Lott has sold out Republicans time and time again. The Democrats are useful idiots in this regard for helping give Lott the push that Republicans could not without appearing disloyal.

If Lott had previously stood with his party, instead of giving in to Tom Daschle every chance he got, then Bush and others would have thrown their support behind Lott, and this matter would be over.

Cream always rises to the top, eh?

Cream like McCain?

I'm surprised you're not pimping McCain.

The Senate is not a body of brash people. Nickles just committed a brash act.

A brash man will not be elected to lead a body of non-brash people.

I already stated that Lott shouldn't step down now, because it would be seen as giving in to the left, aka the race/poverty pimps, however, Lott's problems with the right are because he was weak in the past. If he survives this, I hope he remembers that, when dealing with the dems in the future.

President Bush isn't "pandering" to the RATS or to anyone. He did no more than stand up and defend the Republican party. You keep repeating the same thing over and over, ignoring any truth but the one that YOU want to manufacture.

The Republican party needs people like you as much as it needs people like Lott...though I doubt that you are a Republican.

That's the job of the Majority leader, too! Pedantic, abrasive, hard edged ideolgues, like Tom Daschle, aren't effective leaders. They lose. They alienate. They are out for themselves.

The job description requires someone with Lott's talents to TRIM!

I find this an interesting comment since there hasn't been an election for the senate majority leader.

I think one was held just after the election in Nov. when it became clear that the Repubs. had the majority immediately. All they have to do now is hold a NEW election when the entire Senate is seated in January. It would include the votes of all the new Senators, and would be the most fair thing to do.

Did you know that Lott was a former Democrat too? Not a crime; so was Ronald Reagan.
The only thing that matters is that Trent Lott was never a good Republican leader, and for that, he is going down. I would think he is writing his resignation at this very moment.

Do you think ole Trent would be content with exile in Mississippi? Maybe he should buy Jefferson Davis old plantation?

"Exile in Mississippi"? I'm sure Mississippians will appreciate your sentiment.

You don't know the South very well, Robby. You ought to quit while you're ahead. Stick to the religion forum.

Very interesting. The dems might be sorry now that they've been attacking Lott. They at least could always roll him over. It'll be a different kettle of fish with Nickles or Frist.

Well, then you are a bigger IDIOT than I thought. I have worked hard to get President Bush elected in Arkansas. No thanks to the likes of you who think you are better than the rest of us. I should have stayed home instead of wasting my time.

You think President Bush might be reading from Rove's script??? That is a truly shocking statement to me. This President, now and as governor of Texas, has done all he could to reach out to minorities. He believes in his Christian beliefs!! He was angry, it showed, and it was real.
