"..throw Lott out, the whole party is going to crumble."

If the only thing holding this party together is a thin reed like Trent Lott, then it's already crumbled, and just hasn't had the little breeze necessary to blow it down.

If the RC handles this with decorum and clarity, regardless of what WussyBoy does, it will be a tremendous boost for the Party, and reinforce the truth about Conservatives not tolerating weaselly racist innuendo.

This can go a long way toward disarming the race card.
Lott's arrogant ego is a small price to pay for correcting our image among minority voters. Remember, an increase in black votes to a mere 15-20% and the democrat party is sucking wind for years to come. And we can have that without altering our agenda, if we can build credibility on the race issue.

Dumping Lott on our own initiative, not waiting for the firestorm to get too hot and folding under pressure, does that. It's also the right thing to do.

"When has that little cockroach EVER done anything good for the Republican Party?"

There is a first time for everything.

"Lott gets challenged, the majority of GOP senators will vote for ANYONE else"

Not so. For Lott to fall his support has to drop to less than 25 other Republican Senators. I haven't seen any indication so far that this will happen. Nickles is making a bold play and it is all or nothing for him in terms of getting other Senator's votes. At this point I'm betting Nickles will get only a handful of Senators to support him. Even more likely is that he will just quietly back away if his headcount doesn't rise above single digits.

It takes somebody to beat somebody.

Now if the President gets involved then everyhing changes. Over to you GW.

I should have clarified that by saying, if Lott retires and McCain bolts to run as an independant in 04.

I am rubbing this news in your face,(Sunday, Sunday, Sunday) because of all of your name calling against your fellow freepers, just because they didn’t see things the way you do.

You're not rubbing anything, Boy. I've called nobody any names, though I may start, with you.

The only thing that has happened today is Nickles has fired the opening salvo in a war. He may win it, he may not.

You and your fellow race pimps (you are, after all, standing alongside Maxine Waters) have successfully beat Lott down.

You will likely get your wish, and you will also likely get an evenly split Senate once again.

I don't care whether your smugness likes that or not, but that is what you will have.

Doesn't surprise me. The point being there is NO WAY Trent Lott could prove he wasn't a racist while everyone was telling him what HE THOUGHT!

Maybe you will enjoy Hillary as President when the voters who voted for Bush stay home because they have had enough of the race-baiting.

This is a very craven move by Nickles, demonstrating how personally ambitious he is as a pol.He could have waited and done this quietly, worked on alliances with more moderate elements in the caucus, but he had to grab for it now when he lacked the fortitude to do it a few months back.Somehow his suuporters think this won't hurt the Bush agenda right off the bat?

Nickles is showing he isn't up to the job but doing it this way.He has no sense of tactics, or lotalty, and no one knows whether this guy has the ability at all to keep 51 divergent egos all in check.Freepers can rail all they want about getting a guy with "guts" and being conservative enough, but when a man with an ACU rating of 93 is deemed weak when his job is to manage the competing interests of so many Senators and advance the ball, just what the hell do they expect?

Freepers are ignoramusus about what the Majority Leader's job is all about. If they want high drama from their politics say so, but pragmatism is the most crucial element required by a leader of that body.Nickles fails on this score.

Nickles is showing he doesn't have the smarts to be an effective leader. There is a reason that he was never voted leader, and it's apparent for all to see now.

I don't won't to hear one person complain when Hillary takes the oath of office as President(dictator) of this country. NOT ONE!

You're kidding.

I, for one, would protest every inch of the way before that would ever happen and if by hook or by CROOK she pulled it off I would complain and protest plenty and why you wouldn't like it because of THIS situation is beyond me.

Don Nickles is an honorable man as far as I know, but if he has some racial skeletons, then he will be gone too.

Is this another threat by someone who would rather live in the past than to stake out a solid future for our nation?

Who among us doesn't have at least one "skeleton" in our closet that an opportunist wouldn't manipulate to his/her benefit? Who among us has never said anything negative or held negative thoughts about people of other races, sex, or nationalities?

And yet all who want to oust Lott over a poor choice of words are showing that their true stripes are as race-baited as they assume Lott's words were.

Totally agree with you. He was not a good majority leader. Too much of a compromiser with the Dems, who are now attacking him all over the place.

In his apology, he said he was taking "full responsibility". Well, if the Senate thinks it is time to change leaders, "taking responsibility" means stepping down gracefully, but remaining in the Senate for the good of the country. If he resigns his Senate seat, he will prove that he was never actually committed to the GOP platform and how self-serving he really is.

What Republicans need are some of Hillary's files. The one on Trent "the ol' Miss cheerleader" Lott. The Repubs tell Trent that if he quits the Senate in a huff, due to Nickle's elevation, the files get released. That would kill any future lobbying bonanza Trent is contemplating.

"Ef the Republican Party."

Sadly, that's about the level of maturity I would expect from Lott. A self-respecting man would have the humility to join with the greater good, an arrogant narcissist would do what you predict.

We'll see if Lott has self-respect, or just pompous narcissism.

He said Lott wouldn't want to hang around 50 colleagues who just dumped him.

If Lott wants to compound his stupidity astronomically, he'll quit the Senate. If he wants to see his reputation rebuilt over time, he'll stay.

He can step off the cliff into political oblivion forever or he can sit down, shut up and regain love and respect from his fellow Republicans...that's his choice.

I've called nobody any names, though I may start, with you.

Maybe not on this thread, but I can quote you over many in the past few days, were it worth the time. I would personally slap Maxine Waters silly had I the chance, so wrong again, Sink.

Lott is very likely to step down before the day is over. That was my prediction. Maybe in the future, you and I can argue without the invectives? It is unnecessary and beneath conservatives, who ought to be able to disagree honorably. Would you agree?
