I listen to Rice and Powell, who when asked, refused to support Lott. Then Belafonte was right, they are nothing more than house slaves.

Lott is/was the nice guy power-sharer. Nickles wouldn't stand for it, from what I know about Nickles (admittedly that's not much)
Which gets to the point of having a more effective ML.

For those of us that want Lott to step down as leader but remain in the Senate, now is NOT the time to be calling him every foul name in the book. Such vitriole does nothing to persuade Senators to vote against him. Further, if he loses, we are then asking him to do us a favor by staying in the Senate. Some of his alleged strategy to hold onto his position may appear unseemly, but in negotiations sometimes you have to swallow your pride and be pragmatic. Looks like Nichols(and likely the Senate) has called his bluff, no need to rub his nose in it and run him off.
That being said, I would phrase it this way: If Lott loses, his response will be likely ultimately decide how he is viewed by history. His party more than ever needs him in the Senate. If he loses yet chooses to stay, much of the criticisms I had of him will be washed away. Will he end his career on a positive note in the party's eyes, like a Gingrich, Dole, and Ford, or as a Jeffords?

If Lott is asked to step down by the Senate Republicans, his backers state he will resign from the Senate and let the Democrat Governor of Mississippi select his successor, evening up the balance of power in the Senate at 50-50.
It saddens me to see the current Senate Majority leader employ a "If I don't get my way, I'll take my ball home" attitude and foresake the Republicans in the Senate, in the House, in Mississsippi, and all across the nation. Thats pretty selfish of Trent Lott if you ask me.

Lott can just announce he's not going seek election to Senate Majority Leader. It's too late. If Nickles had not jumped offside, Lott may have come to the conclusion himself, before January 6.
But now, he'll dig in and go down fighting.
And, he'll go out the door if he loses.
I just heard the smarmy Bill Kristol, crowing like a cock, about how Lott is finished and "it's best for the Republican Party."
When has that little cockroach EVER done anything good for the Republican Party?

Well, I was just throwing out nice places to go, but I wouldn't be surprised if FR became a clearing-house for like-minded individuals to make travel plans together during a lame-duck session. Maybe we can get some volume discounts from some FReeper travel agents out there? ;^)
Now, if there is a will to forcefully carve out a place for Constitutional principles to become fashionable once again, Texas is probably the place to go.

Nobody is calling him a racist, they're calling him a boob. Now you've done it! We're gonna have to grovel for weeks, asking for appologies from the women voters, because you called someone a boob! When's it going to end!!!

Are you also a bigot? Prove you're not. I am a bigot, because I have problems with stupid people, and those who ask silly questions in search of a point.

I hope Lott retires, McCain switches to independant and the RATS shove the Pelosi agenda down our throats. This is why I left the GOP before, because it's the party of self sabotage. So the truth finally comes out. You never had the Republicans best interest at heart.

Let's just say you and I have much different perceptions of President Bush.

CBS reporting this now.

Lott is not going to give a Democrat governor the power to appoint a Democrat from Mississippi to the Senate. He will hold his seat until at least 2004.

"It looks like Trent Lott's potential successor as Majority Leader, Don Nickles, has some questionable acts of his own, for which he should apologize." But...but...I thought if we got rid of Lott, we'd prove to the world that Republicans aren't racists.
I mean...isn't Lott supposed to be the last Republican borked? [/sarcasm]
I guess the enemy can smell our fear.
To: TLBSHOW
Has it occurred to you that Nickles might not want the job, but is acting on integrity to get rid of Lott? My vote has always been for Rick Santorum, though Nickles would do a fine job if elected.

And I would say "KISS MY REAR" President Bush. Some people's votes are more important to you than standing up for what is right instead of letting them use race as an issue AGAIN like they did with Judge Pickering and you didn't defend him either.'Standing up for what is right' means dumping this moron. Given the makeup of the committee at the time, Bush did the best he could for Pickering. He might have had a second chance, after Bush's efforts in the election. But Pickering is now finished---thanks to Lott.

But the chorus is still same, whether it's the Democrats calling him a racist or the Republicans calling him stupid, all the American people are hearing is a lot of noise, and a noise that the Republicans have helped to broadcast.Evidently you didn't read my whole post where in the very next line I conceded he may well ride off into the sunset, meaning I agree, the result would still be the same no matter the movitation. We'll see...
To: TennTuxedo
It's pretty stupid of President Bush not to support him KNOWING that he isn't a racist. Hey, that doesn't matter as long as the RATS "like" us. Screw the people who VOTED for him and supported him EVEN when he was GIVING away everything we have ever believed in.

I'm voting for McCain if Lott retires. For Majority Leader? Are you Senator Lenin(HL) or Senator Lenin(PU)? :^)
