I agree. Don Nickles would be a good choice. But he would have been a good choice before Trent Lott put his foot in his mouth. I think there are good reasons for the GOP to have another Senate Majority Leader, but getting rid of Lott over his gaffe is not a good idea, IMHO. Unless and until they can replace Lott at a time when the replacement is completely because they have someone better -- and not because the Democrats and the media made a circus out of his statements about Strom -- I'm not in favor of the switch.

This is a forgiving country," said Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who becomes GOP whip in the new Congress in January. "He knows he made a big mistake. It's time to forgive him and to move on. And I think he can still be a very effective majority leader in the Senate."

Several other Republican senators, including John Warner of Virginia and Peter Fitzgerald of Illinois, joined the "enough is enough" chorus.

Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., said Lott's apology was necessary. "He let his party down," Hagel said. He added, "I know of no one in our party calling for him to step down."

Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee, a moderate Republican, told The Providence Journal that Lott's remarks smacked of "stupidity." He did not call for Lott to step aside, saying he worries that potential successors might be even more conservative than the Mississippian.

President Bush last week rebuked Lott, but his spokesman said the president did not believe Lott should step down.

I disagree and think personally that the time is now. We need to unify our party for the battles ahead.

If Trent will do the honorable thing and take a committee chairmanship, the party will even rally around him.

I am going to phone the Whitehouse Monday, and Lotts, Nickles and Frisk's office. One ask for Lott's resignation and two to recommend these suitable replacements.

We need to call, Lott dropped the ball on Impeachment, The power-sharing with Tommy Boy and the Jeffords deal and now "this mess", it is time for the door to hit him in the A** on the way out.

If he wants to quit the Senate and take his marbles home with him that is good too.

AOL has a poll on who Time Magazine should name as their person of the year. President Bush is on top but only beating Eminem (sp?) by 1%. We can't allow that. Please vote.

EV, if you read deport's post, Chaffee is afraid if Lott goes, there will be a more conservative ML...see what I mean? He probably wouldn't vote for Nickles and neither would his RINO cronies. We just have to know the vote ahead of time. Maybe the President already does and that's why he hasn't called for Lott to step down. No matter what, Lott will be a major liability - especially since the RATS are coming out and saying he should stay as ML.
