my opinion is that after mostly 50 years of a democrat-controlled congress, lott does a stupid.

if he had integrity, he'd not present himself for election to the u.s. senate for majority leader.

leadership of the senate should go to someone more intelligent.

Drop Kick Him Out on His @ss Anyway! That kind of disloyalty we don't need. He threatens to flush the entire string of victories down the toilet unless Bush caves in to Lott's frigging blackmail!

What! If he said this, now I'm absolutely convinced he should resign or be ousted! What a nasty little rat! He's even a worse man than I thought!

If folks aren't careful, we could end up with the Senate back in RAT hands.

As someone else said, this is management 101. Lott is not blackmailing anyone - he's simply saying what he'll do. It's the people trying to fry him who are forcing the issue. This is NOT the way we want Lott to resign. To do so would leave a precedent hanging over this administration and Republicans in general.

I hope they call his bluff. If he resigns from the Senate for getting kicked out of his post, it means he does not belong in the Senate. What man who puts himself above the future of this nation does?

Lott needs to learn a lesson from Newt.

I don't blame him one bit. This whole thing is so overblown that I'd be just as pissed about the
fellow Republicans giving him heat. Lott is not a racist, and it is obvious that all this Democratic heat is just political posturing.

If Karl's account is correct, wht did only three or four of the Senators view this as blackmail? It's blatant blackmail.

Magnanimity is NOT one of Trent Lott's virtues; as evidenced by his faint heart in the Impeachment trial and his worthless act attempt to be nice to Dems (when the pre-Jefford's split was 50/50) by giving some committee chairs to dems.

Senator Limpa-Lott, politically inept, stupid, a 100% liability...now officially blackmails the agenda. Everyone that believes he won't sell the farm to the other side again after his past and present is as ignorant as this selfish dolt is. Another worthless Senate Majority as Lott shows again that he's a trump card...for the RATS.

Trent Lott, a walking advertisement for term limits.

What a selfish moron. He could give a damn, as long as he has it his way.

Why did the Republicans ever keep this idiot as the majority leader?

Trent Lott. Yet another indespensible man, at least in his own mind.

I say call his bluff. He won't resign, he'll just take a place on the back bench where he should have been all along. And even if he does resign, and is replaced temporarily with a Democrat appointed by the Gov. Musgrave, the GOP will still control the Senate with Cheney's tie-breaking vote, unless there's another party switcher. I question whether any Republican would cross the aisle knowing that a) the Mississippi seat is likely to revert to the GOP after the special election (Roger Wicker would be one good possibility), and b) the GOP is well positioned to gain Senate seats in '04, with Dubya at the top of the ticket.

This could get interesting. The Dems (at least for now) don't have the votes to elect one of their own as Senate President Pro-tem, but they could put their 49 votes together behind a Republican other than Lott, in which case only 2 GOP defectors (presumably including the winner of the vote) would be needed. I think that if it becomes evident that a) the Dems will vote as a bloc, and b) there are a couple of Republican defections announced in advance, the Lott support will collapse, and he'd lose in a landslide. That's two big "ifs," but stranger things have happened.

Lott must go as Majority Leader. He's self-absorbed, petty, and ineffectual, dependable as a conservative vote, but not made of leadership material. It would suit me fine for him to stay in the Senate, but if he wants to bail, I can live with that, too. I think the risk of a Dem takeover is minimal.

I can just image Bob Dole hearing about this and calling up Lott.

"Trent I hear you are threatening to resign, I did a lot for you over the years and if my wife don't get to be head of a committee because of you I will break your kneecaps"

One thing to remember if he did resign is that now that Strom and Helms is gone our Republican Senators is much better health than many of the Democrats. Byrd and Hollings is up there and old Ted Kennedy is going to die from fast living and booze one of these days. I predict the next Senator to die in office will be a Democrat so control might pass back to the Republicans even sooner than 2004.

I can't believe everybody's so willing to swallow this story whole. Unsubstantiated, and reported by cnn and cnbc? Come on! Odds are it's a RAT plant, and that's what I'll believe until proven otherwise. I figure by Sunday night we should know where the GOP senators and Lott stand.

If he insists on playing that way, then we should back off. We do not want another 50/50 Senate. He realizes he has the power and is willing to use it. I wish he'd show the same stubborness when dealing with the Dems.

This will hurt the GOP in the 2004 election. They should develop a strategy to counter the race-baiting before that time.
