LOTT THREATENS TO QUIT THE SENATE IF FORCED FROM LEADERSHIP
Newsnight with Aaron Brown | 12/13/2002 | Jonathan Karl

Posted on 12/13/2002 7:26:54 PM PST by sinkspur

Trent Lott, in a conference call with 27 GOP Senate Republicans today, said that he would leave the Senate if forced from the Leader position.

Jonathan Karl said three or four of the Senators viewed this as "blackmail," but that the majority still support Lott and want him to continue as Leader.

Clinton didn't resign. Lott should stay. If he goes others, (but not Democrats) will be forced out over less. Time back Lott, like him or not. Thes scope her is larger than Lott. It's the party the has to be backed.

Are you comfortable with a racist in the GOP caucus in the Senate?

Not a bit, but my comfort level is not what determines who the people of his state choose as their Senator. They are the ones to be concerned with comfort.

Exactly what I said. Would it make sense that Lott would say this in a conference call to 27 senators? With who knows how many aides listening on the speaker phones?

Nope. Also, I see that three of the trouble-making networoks, CNN, CNBC, and NPR are the ones carrying this story.

Now, a little bit of reason would tell us that there are only a couple of Republican senators who would give a story like this to these networks. The prime candidate would be JOHN MCCAIN.

Since Kristol showed up on NPR, my theory is this is an idea cooked up by Billy-boy and McCain called these networks with the leak.

It is an effort to stampede Lott into leaving.

The nazi racist crap will never stop and you know it.

Before Trent Lott shot his mouth off we could easily prove the charges false. Now we'll have to deal with Trent Lott and his stupid mouth damn near every time we step out and stand for the conservative cause.

Good people like Judge Pickering and many other judicial nominees will have a harder time and probably won't get through with Lott as Majority Leader now. We'd be better off all the way around if he would just step aside as Majority Leader-elect and stay in the Senate.

He's being branded a racist.

Everyone is a racist to some degree or other. (That's how we ended up with races in the first place).

But how many people do you know who actually fought and lobbied to keep blacks out their all-white fraternity? Hmmm?

We could simply keep Lott as the ML but have a Real Republican(tm) in the wings who is actually running most of the show.

That will not work. Lott will still be the target, and every Republican effort will have a solid 49-vote filibuster--and having Lott in the center seat guarantees that those filibusters will look at least somewhat principled.

The important thing here is committees, judgeships, etc... Keep your eyes on the prizes people!

I am. The folks who think the prizes will be there with Lott running things are delusional.

I knew when we won the election and then the Lott rigged his own leadership vote again that it was all for not. Now, we're in a far, far worse position. Predictable. I said it last night, I'll say it again:

Saying that the Lott as Leader is a disaster is an gross understatement...LIMPA-LOTT is a train wreck waiting for an audience.

Having a Democratic Senate was actually kind of cool. I may soon be nostalgic for it. I wouldn't mind running another campaign against the Tom Daschle do-nothing Senate. There may be nothing but long term gains in this for us. Here's what happens if Lott resigns and Chafee switches:

1) There is a much better environment for Republicans in 2004. And even if there isn't, we probably pickup the 1 seat we would need assuming Bush wins reelection.

2) There is a special election for Lott's seat. Lott is probably going to retire in 2006 anyway. So the only real effect is to trade an open seat contest in 2006 for an open seat contest 3 months from now.

3) Chafee switches now instead of later. And we lose a seat that right now looks like the least likely seat to still be in GOP hands after the 2006 elections. And the Dems have to defend that seat in 2006 instead of us.

The dems might have and the pubs controlled the senate.

If the facts about the rape had come out that were in the ford building, clinton would have been hounded out. Even Raines would not have been able to save 'em.

Well, Byrd was a Grand Kleagle of the KKK. Think about that and what was in his mind. But he was Majority Leader. And Byrd used the N word just last year in an interview. But he didn't say that the country wouldn't have had problems if only a segregationalist had won the White House. Because Byrd's not that stupid.

Sadly, the GOP via the Lott just handed the RATS their old-new issue and this won't go away.

Yea, the old issues worked Real well on Nov 5th, didn't they ? I hope this emboldens them to go even farther to the left of where they are already headed. Lay back, relax, W can control Lott from the bullypulpit, what is everybody so worried about ?

You're not acting.

Oh, that's clever. And might I add-- NO profanity, NO personal attacks, NO racism or violence in posts.

Post a few of Lott's legislative "assaults" against blacks. If he's a racist, surely he's voted against blacks.

Someone can be a bigot without being a public activist. I'm talking about Lott's views. Do you expect bigots in Congress to sponsor legislation like "Lynch all the Negroes Day"? Lott isn't stupid. Sometimes he forgets to close his mouth while his brain is talking, but he knows what he must do to stay in power.

And surely you can explain why Lott has a higher percentage of blacks voting for him THAN ANY OTHER SENATOR IN THE OLD SOUTH!

Because Lott doesn't say bigoted things outside of closed doors often.

Or are those blacks on ole Trent's plantation?

No.

Have you ever BEEN someplace outside of New England?

I grew up in the Arkansas Delta.

We white folks pick our own cotton down here.

Yeah, I know. I've done it. So has my dad and my uncles and my grandmother and grandfather, etc.

That was then.Bush is in the WH, and somehow, managed to get back a majority. He sets the agenda and Lott goes to work.Bush is the LEADER, not Lott, so stop fretting over Trent's shortcomings as his job isn't be bold and have "guts".Bush will do that.

A smart ape like you should have seen that by now.Do you understand Lott's job description, or would you rather bloviate?

NO Dem would have voted for impeachment, no matter what

True, but a real trial with the truth brought out would have been kinda nice.

There is an old adage that the only true rumors are the bad ones. I firmly believe Lott will be forced to step down and he will resign his seat. Why? Because each action is just a step in the process.

The first step was to create the issue.

The second step was to put it into the news.

The 3rd step was to call for an apology.

The 4th step was to force Bush to say something.

The 5th step was to say the apology was too vague.

The 6th step was to force another, even more emasculating apology.

The 7th step is to whisper that Lott is now an issue that must go away.

The 8th step is a forced resignation of his Leadership.

The 9th step is to re-focus on Bush and why he did not demand that Lott resign all together.

The 10th step is call for senate censure because resigning the leadership is just not enough punishment considering that Lott admitted his "crime".

The final step is Lott will never stay to face censure.

End game senate control to the democrats.
