Trent Lott, in a conference call with 27 GOP Senate Republicans today, said that he would leave the Senate if forced from the Leader position.
Jonathan Karl said three or four of the Senators viewed this as "blackmail," but that the majority still support Lott and want him to continue as Leader.
Not a bit, but my comfort level is not what determines who the people of his state choose as their Senator. They are the ones to be concerned with comfort.
Nope. Also, I see that three of the trouble-making networoks, CNN, CNBC, and NPR are the ones carrying this story.
Now, a little bit of reason would tell us that there are only a couple of Republican senators who would give a story like this to these networks. The prime candidate would be JOHN MCCAIN.
Since Kristol showed up on NPR, my theory is this is an idea cooked up by Billy-boy and McCain called these networks with the leak.
It is an effort to stampede Lott into leaving.
Before Trent Lott shot his mouth off we could easily prove the charges false. Now we'll have to deal with Trent Lott and his stupid mouth damn near every time we step out and stand for the conservative cause.
Good people like Judge Pickering and many other judicial nominees will have a harder time and probably won't get through with Lott as Majority Leader now. We'd be better off all the way around if he would just step aside as Majority Leader-elect and stay in the Senate.
Everyone is a racist to some degree or other. (That's how we ended up with races in the first place).
But how many people do you know who actually fought and lobbied to keep blacks out their all-white fraternity? Hmmm?
That will not work. Lott will still be the target, and every Republican effort will have a solid 49-vote filibuster--and having Lott in the center seat guarantees that those filibusters will look at least somewhat principled.
The important thing here is committees, judgeships, etc... Keep your eyes on the prizes people!
I am. The folks who think the prizes will be there with Lott running things are delusional.
Such as?
1) There is a much better environment for Republicans in 2004. And even if there isn't, we probably pickup the 1 seat we would need assuming Bush wins reelection.
2) There is a special election for Lott's seat. Lott is probably going to retire in 2006 anyway. So the only real effect is to trade an open seat contest in 2006 for an open seat contest 3 months from now.
3) Chafee switches now instead of later. And we lose a seat that right now looks like the least likely seat to still be in GOP hands after the 2006 elections. And the Dems have to defend that seat in 2006 instead of us.
Oh, that's clever. And might I add-- NO profanity, NO personal attacks, NO racism or violence in posts.
Post a few of Lott's legislative "assaults" against blacks. If he's a racist, surely he's voted against blacks.
Someone can be a bigot without being a public activist. I'm talking about Lott's views. Do you expect bigots in Congress to sponsor legislation like "Lynch all the Negroes Day"? Lott isn't stupid. Sometimes he forgets to close his mouth while his brain is talking, but he knows what he must do to stay in power.
And surely you can explain why Lott has a higher percentage of blacks voting for him THAN ANY OTHER SENATOR IN THE OLD SOUTH!
Because Lott doesn't say bigoted things outside of closed doors often.
Or are those blacks on ole Trent's plantation?
No.
Have you ever BEEN someplace outside of New England?
I grew up in the Arkansas Delta.
We white folks pick our own cotton down here.
Yeah, I know. I've done it. So has my dad and my uncles and my grandmother and grandfather, etc.
True, but a real trial with the truth brought out would have been kinda nice.
Every member of every fraternity at every white college that exists. Is that enough for you?
The first step was to create the issue.
The second step was to put it into the news.
The 3rd step was to call for an apology.
The 4th step was to force Bush to say something.
The 5th step was to say the apology was too vague.
The 6th step was to force another, even more emasculating apology.
The 7th step is to whisper that Lott is now an issue that must go away.
The 8th step is a forced resignation of his Leadership.
The 9th step is to re-focus on Bush and why he did not demand that Lott resign all together.
The 10th step is call for senate censure because resigning the leadership is just not enough punishment considering that Lott admitted his "crime".
The final step is Lott will never stay to face censure.
End game senate control to the democrats.
