Lott should just apologize, shut up, and not run for Majority Leader next year. End of subject.

Lott should just apologize, shut up, and not run for Majority Leader next year. Agreed. And he can start by apologizing to the House Managers.

The problem is the 'Pubbies already voted for Majority Leader for next year. There's no 'just slink out of town' option.
IMHO, Lott has got to go. I detest the left piling on, but there is no place in the leadership for someone who is either (1) a racist or (2) hopelessly obtuse. I won't get into whether Lott is a racist or not, but for the good of the party and the country, he has got to go.
To: CatoRenasci
Then Lott can decline the office, and the Pubbies can try to find someone to vote for whose FBI file isn't quite so thick.

He'd have to resign that position as he has already been elected to it on Nov. 13, 2002. The Republicans in the both Senate and House have already elected leadership positions for the 108th..

Lott should stick it to the Dems on the way out by proposing a change to Senate Rules that no Klansman or Former Klansman (aka Robert Byrd) can Serve as a Committee Chair or Ranking Member. Let's see how the Hypocrite Rats try to weasel out of that vote to punish one of their racist collegues.
To: spokeshave
I can understand why FReepers keep on bringing up a 60 year old charge against an 80 year old man, but for Pubs to bring that up would show that they are the party of finger pointing and not leadership. Let little quibbles like Lott's statement fall by the wayside. He has to go, and like the poster above pointed out mainly has he's so obtuse.
Lott was bound to do something idiotic in the near future and we should welcome this as a chance to politely get rid of him.

I really don't think he'll resign the leadership postition just yet. I think he's going to try and explain his position, what he said and what he meant by it. JMO.
I can't find anything to back it up but Robert Byrd was the ML for the 96th, 96th, and 100th Senates. He was replaced by George Mitchell in the 101st. Someone has said it was a flap over the KKK membership and they offered him the Chairmanship of the Appropriations Comm to step down. I don't know how accurate the above is...

And he can start by apologizing to the House Managers. You can get your pound of flesh later.
For now let's concentrate on:
A) Making sure Lott knows that if he resigns his Senate seat his name will be lower than dirt forever.
B) Making sure that he hands the reins of the Senate over to more capable hands immediately; before he drags our party, our President, and our country any lower with this stupidity.
C) Participating in a massive Republican effort to counter the RATS with bold rebuttal to their attacks that vividly highlight their hypocrisy on this whole thing.
To: CatoRenasci
Should he resign his seat too?

He'd have to resign that position as he has already been elected to it on Nov. 13, 2002. The Republicans in the both Senate and House have already elected leadership positions for the 108th. While that is certainly true, there is not a thing in the world that can prevent the Senate GOP Caucus from getting in a room and having a new election.
IMO, they should do it sooner rather than later...the new leader needs the time to prepare for the battles to come in January.
To: CyberCowboy777
Should he resign his seat too? I wish everyone here would get the fact that that is the absolute worst possible outcome to this mess.
To: ewing
What does Lott have to do so that we CAN get rid of him as leader??
His "more thorough" apology will surely be more hand-wringing "Look what I have done for black people" crap, maybe with some glycerine tears in his eyes as he makes an oblique reference to "those days were long ago" or "I didn't realize Negroes would have wanted to be in Sigma Nu" or some such.
What can we do to get him to step down?

Did anyone oppose Lott on the Nov 13th election? I thought Nickles was going to make a run for ML.

The operative word in the title is "TODAY". Drudge knows what is going on. Lott is not going to survive the weekend.
To: ewing
It's time for him to go ... Lott that is.
BTW, anyone see that hideous article by Adam CLYMER today about racism and the GOP!!!!
To: lelio
Did anyone oppose Lott on the Nov 13th election? No.
But wasn't it held in October, before Election Day?
It was a stacked election held before its time...I didn't like the timing or the way they did it then, and that dislike has certainly been fully justified.
To: ewing
Let me see now...Bubba held up his right hand, swore to God to tell the truth, lied, got caught...and then said that he'd never resign. I've felt for years that Lott's been a failure as MJ, but I'd be damned if I'd resign as MJ because the left-wingers said to. He'd better not even think of resigning his senate seat.
Let this thing blow over and then quietly put in Nickles as MJ. It can be done.
