He's using the word "today" in specific reference to the news conference that has been called for 5:30 EST this evening. When someone call a news conference late on Friday, it normally means this is nothing more than an attempt to say a few things and then let the story die for a couple of days.
By the Sunday morning television talk shows, you'll have Republicans passing off the story by calling it "old news."

No, that's for the voters of Mississippi to decide, should Lott be so misguided as to run for reelection again.

>I can understand why FReepers keep on bringing up a 60 year old charge against an 80 year old man, but for Pubs to bring that up would show that they are the party of finger pointing and not leadership. Let little quibbles like Lott's statement fall by the wayside.
I've heard that Byrd was not merely a klansman, but in fact a grand dragon. Is that true?

I guess we will see, wont we?

LOL! Drudge just removed the word "TODAY" from his web site.
To: BuddhaBoy
LOL!!
Over the last few months it has become apparent to me that Drudge has FreeRepublic open in a separate window for 24 hours a day.
Good catch.
To: Dialup Llama
I think he was a 'keegle' whatever that means. Corporations make everyone a Vice President, the Klan gives you some kool sounding name.

Lott has already apologized. What he needs to do now is to sit back and plot some cold, heartless, cruel, revenge against the RATS.

And I reckon that President Reagan should have resigned when the Left branded him a Nazi sympathizer for visiting Bitburg cemetery?
Daschle & Co. are playin' folks in the GOP like a fiddle.
Hell, why do they even worry about winning back the Oval Office, when it's obvious they are the de facto occupants.

You have missed the boat. As the Malkin thread shows, Lott is adopting a policy of sell-out and appeasement of the Black Caucus. In fact, in his interview on Larry King, he promised to throw more money their way including set-asides. I am completely mystified as to why conservatives feel the need to defend this sell out!

"I can't find anything to back it up but Robert Byrd was the ML for the 96th, 96th, and 100th Senates. He was replaced by George Mitchell in the 101st. Someone has said it was a flap over the KKK membership "
Why for one can't we be first on these things rather than reactionary? Why can't we be the ones to demand that those three communists who went to Baghdad be expelled (OK, Bonoir is gone, I know but what about McD?)? Why didn't we say back then that no KKK member could be majority leader? What would the socialist dems have done to us??? Can't we ever go on offense? Not just react?

I am listeng to El Rushbo.
I see he borrowed my term for the current crusade, aka, tar 'n featherin'.

Byrd was a Kleagle, which is ranking position within the Klan. Not a very high position, but it is up there. He was involved in recruiting members.
He was also an active member during a time when the Klan was already considered a subversive organization, with ties to violent activity in several states. In other words, in today's parlance "a terrorist organization."
Byrd engaged in this activity as a member of a well-known Virginia and WV political family. To be blunt, he was old enough, and bred well-enough to know better than to make bed and be a member of the Ku Klux Klan.
His past cannot be forgottenor forgiven.

In 1911 Truman (who was 27) wrote to his future wife, Bess: "I think one man is just as good as another so long as he's honest and decent and not a nigger or a Chinaman. Uncle Will [probably Wfiliam Yount, the brother of Truman's mother] says that the Lord made a white man from dust, a nigger from mud, then He threw up what was left and it came down a Chinaman."
Truman continued: "[I] am strongly of the opinion Negroes ought to be in Africa, yellow men in Asia and white men in Europe and America."

Hmmmm Truman v Thurm V Dewey....Looks like Dewey should have won........because Truman and Thurm were racist back in 1948
