I dont mean to pick on the elderly but beyond reaching the age of 100 with an ability to eye the women and serving 50 years in the Senate, what is so impressive about Thurmond's career. What is he known for other than the Dixie Crat rebellion and the longest filibuster in history (against civil rights)? Just curious as to what you see as so admirable about this guy other than for last 40 years or so he has had an R after his name.

I agree with you that NOW is against Partial Birth Abortion being banned, but it is silly to think this is what this is about.

You have partisan politics combined with some genuine concern about Lott's mentality on the dem side who are zinging Lott. You have republicans like Jack Kemp who fear about race relations and growing the minority base in the GOP, on the republican side.

Daschle's first instinct was to protect Lott. It is extremely telling.

NOW President Says Trent Lott is Unfit to Lead Senate

"Sen. Trent Lott's racist and sexist comments are outrageous and his apology is insufficient," said NOW President Kim Gandy. "The latest revelations offer ample evidence that Lott is unfit to assume a leadership role in the Senate. He should step down as a candidate for Senate majority leader or the Republicans must select someone who appreciates the progress made in this country over the last 50 years."

At Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday celebration, Lott expressed support for the Senator's 1948 presidential campaign, run on the Dixiecrat platform which stood for "the segregation of the races and the racial integrity of each race." Lott suggested that if Thurmond had been elected president, the U.S. "wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years."

Reports now reveal that Lott made an almost identical remark about Thurmond at a rally for Ronald Reagan in 1980. "Feminists who are familiar with Lott's history and his record in the Senate are not surprised by his sentiments. What he sees as a lack of judgment, we see as a lack of character," Gandy said.

One point that bears repeating is that sleazy toe sucking Dick Morris kept switching around between two clients: William Jefferson Clinton and Trent Lott. That says alot.

But does any of this justify throwing Lott to the wolves on a false charge of racism?

The charge that he is a racist is not the main criticism of Lott. What galls us is that he spews some nonsense and then doesnt have the common sense to quickly apologize and move on. If Lott had shown some ability to manage the situation and put it to rest we might have forgiven his ill conceived words. But no, he took four days to make a Clinton non-apology apology.
