Prayer Request for Coast Guard Rescue that is Underway in Oregon
68-69TonkinGulfYatchClub

Pray Request

This same boat, 52' Motor Lifeboat Intrepid, is right now towing a 52' sailboat back to Charleston OR.
On board are 3 of my Coast Guard Brothers and 1 Sister.
They are battling 30-40 foot waves and nearing the harbor entrance.
They have been underway since 10 AM PST and went about 15 miles out
to rescue the sailboat and the 2 people onboard.
Due to extreme bar conditions
They will have to stay outside of the bar and attempt a crossing in the morning.
The 2 47' boats will be at the bar entrance when they finally cross.
I personally know all involved (except the man and woman on the sailboat).
This is how some of my Brothers and Sisters that I work with every Thursday
are spending part of this holiday season, saving others lives.
The former CO of the base is the SAR (Search and Rescue) co-ordinator at the
13th CG District headquarters in Seattle.
Please say a prayer for the safety of all involved.
Thank You

Prayers for them, Tonk. I know that crossing the bar in bad weather is a tough move.

Hard to believe they are attempting a tow in that sea state. Good luck to all! Keep us posted.

One of the old unofficial mottos of the Coast Guard was

"You gotta go out. You don't have to come back."

"When I was in the Navy I used to make fun of "coasties" until I saw that they went out in the very same conditions I went out in, but they were aboard a ship ONE-TENTH the size of the one I was on."

I spent 3 years on the same destroyer which was about 300' long.
I spent a lot of days in rough seas on her.
I've been out on this 52' a few times in "somewhat" "rough" seas, 48-8 ft waves.
30-40 ft waves in a destroyer is bad enough, but on a 52' it has to be really bad.
Like I said, I talked to all 4 before they got underway
and all knew what to expect and gladly left.
I know them, their wives (and husband) and kids.
I'm honored to serve with them
and the other crew members on the base each week.

"Hard to believe they are attempting a tow in that sea state."

I heard most all of this from the radio room,
I'm in OPS now, but the radio room is just down the hall.
They made it sound easy.
They practice at least twice a week towing each other.
A CG helo was on scene also.

"They will be in for one hell of a night."

I pray that God will send His angels to surround and protect them on this horrible night.

I thought it would be nice to put things in perspective for the landlubbers here. I joined a VERY old picture of a ship I was on, going through a typhoon, with your Coast Guard vessel, so that a comparison could be made. My first ship was 350 feet long. It was an old LST.(tank landing ship).
The Coast Guard vessel is compared to it's size in an approximation. I hope this explains the danger.

CG Rescue update

Just got off the phone with the base, the Intrepid is at K bouy,
the bouy that marks the entrance to the bar.
Sailboat in tow they will be circiling the bouy all night
waiting for the bar to subside so they can cross it.
Man and woman on 55' sailboat safe and sound,
Intrepid crew safe and sound.
Now they just have to ride the waves all night.
Average seas are now approx 20'

Thank You All for your prayers.

"old picture of a ship I was on, going through a typhoon"

Worst time I ever had on my destroter was in a typhoon outside of Japan.
60-80' waves, 46 1/2 degree roll at one point.
