I've never met one. The ones I know are primarily political liberals who attend the local Unitarian church to hear political speakers and organize for political action groups. Around here at least, it's just an excuse for the Birkenstock and granola crowd to get together.

What do you get when you cross a Unitarian with a Jehovah's Witness? . . . somebody who knocks on your door for no apparent reason.

you have it right - Unitarians are typically very leftist and peace-activist types.

A some better questions would be; What is a Unitarian? What do they believe (if anything) and how has it changed from what they used to believe?

Unitarians are not Christian, by definition.

I alway ask them if they have naked dancing girls, temple prostitutes and human sacrifices, keeps them from talking about inclusiveness. We all have to love our brother, sister or dog.

From what I know about them, even though they could never support the concept of excommunication, they would probably make an exception for a conservative.

You may want to check out a thread I started early last year Considering the Unitarian Church -- anybody out there belong? . I never did check out one of their churches after reading the responses to the thread, after getting some honest feedback from Freepers.

I once attended a Unitarian church service in VA. Really different. Don't plan on ever attending a service there again. Since religious entities weren't even mentioned, felt like I attended a business meeting instead of a church service.

The only Unitarian I know is a lesbian college professor who quit her teaching gig to join the Peace Corps, but then was injured in a rockclimbing incident so, as far as I know, she just hangs out with the other Unitarians in Ohio and ponders unanswerable great questions.

The full name of the group is the Unitarian Universalist Association.

The Unitarians were liberal Baptists and Congregationalists who came to believe that Jesus was only a man and not divine, and that there is therefore no Trinity. They believed that his role was that of a prophet sent by God to teach people that faith, good conduct and charity are what God wants from all men.

The Universalists were liberal Congregationalists who believed that there was no such thing as Hell - that a just God would never have recourse to such a thing.

The two groups, centered in New England, merged in the XVIIIth century and became a single association.

In order to be a Unitarian Universalist, you are not required to believe in any specific religious dogma, including the existence of God. You are only required to share the values of your local Unitarian Universalist community.

I'm a conservative pagan/Wiccan and wouldn't dream of affiliating with the Unitarian Church because it's a hotbed of feel-good leftism.

That's pretty much what I have heard about them - very presumptuous of them to claim themselves as a church. Seems more like a typically insular left-wing debating society.

From my limited experience, (attendance at a couple of functions) you cannot get any more loony-left than this group.
