I'm no Trent Lott apologist, but he is right about one thing, if we had elected Strom Thurmond back in 1948 America would have been much better off.

I think Lott is simply talking about how conservative Strom was and it had nothing to do with segregation. It's clear to me his remark "we would be better off" is referring to the liberal leftist policies of the democrats over the last umpteen years with welfare, nany state, etc Lott has said as much in his pathetic apology. Unfortunately he hasn't done a good job of damage control. You would have thunk he might have learned something from Clinton.

Boy, you'd better watch out saying things like that around here. Next thing you know, it will be wrong to have supported Barry Goldwater, since he voted against the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Then you're REALLY going to get it!

Most Freepers are not able to understand that Thurmond was 500 times better a choice than Truman or Milquetoast Dewey or the Commie Wallace. Nor can they grasp that Lott was not evil for squelching a trial of Clinton which would have ended in abysmal failure for the Republicans. Everyone already knew Clinton was a scumbucket, and a trial wouldn't have changed anything. But don't going trying to tell that to the armchair political geniuses on FR.
