LOTT SAID IT BEFORE (Drudge Siren)
Drudge ^ | 12/10/02 | Drudge

After a fiery speech by Thurmond at a Mississippi campaign rally for Ronald Reagan in November 1980, Lott, then a congressman, told a crowd in Jackson: "You know, if we had elected this man 30 years ago, we wouldn't be in the mess we are today."

I wonder how many of the other people bashing Lott here are also infiltrators sent over by the DNC.

Wow. You're so damn ignorant, you don't know what you're ignorant about.

Try history.

I only want him to stay in office to retain the pubby control of the Senate.

Methinks he should be spending the time between now and 2006 explaining to the good folk of Mississippi why he should stay in office, instead of being a Majority Leader with a penchant for saying stupid stuff and giving the store away to the Dems.

So you are telling me how to think now??

If someone teaches you how to configure a piece of computer software, is he telling you how to think?

Dude, I'm telling you, apologies are unconditional. That is their nature. The "if anyone was offended" piece basically says that any offense is solely the fault of the offended. And that is downright smarmy.

Yeah, maybe dems and libertarians. To some politics is a sport or a religion I suppose.

When do they vote for Senate Majority Leader for next Congress (or have they already done that)? Seems they could just vote in someone else for the post without Lott having to actually resign the post and give dems the pleasure. Also - with Ted Kennedy and Hillary in the Senate and Condit staying in the House, there's no way Lott should even consider resigning his Senate seat over just a stupid remark.

This wasn't even in the press until Sunday

The mainstream press. What about the black-oriented media?

First, I'm not a dude .. second, the reason I used the word if was because at the time I made the post I didn't realize it would offend anyone, I got carried away trying to raise money to keep this site up .. some were offended .. some were not .. hence my reason for "if I offended anyone"

I assure you that my apology was sincer, I do not go around apologizing for things I do not believe in.

You have manage to do your best to insult me by saying that I can't think for myself .. called me a lier .. said I lacked class, called me an Elenore Cliff .. I am sure there are more I could add .. I didn't write them all down

All because I do not believe Lott is a racist

You keep talking about doing the right thing?? .. Fine then nail Lott for something he is gulity of ..

As I have stated in the pass .. I will shed no tears for Lott whenever he does step down .. but I am no falling for the trap the Left want us to .. they need to clean their own house before they should try to clean ours

Lott may or may not be a racist. That part is actually immaterial. But he is, without question, extremely stupid. Stupidity is not a crime; but the punishment for stupidity is usually a variation on the them of capital punishment, and there is provision for appellate review or executive clemency.

Lott has exceeded his cost-benefit ratio as majority leader.

He doesn't need to be Majority leader anyway. He's ineffective, and he panders to the Dems too much.

I agree. The only reason it came to this was because of Lott, period, paragraph and end of story. We can now 'triangulate' the RATS even more efficiently by continuing to claim the high ground. How can any conservative defend Lott anyway? This is a blessing in disguise IMO...

There is an opportunity to get some of the black vote. Thomas Sowell explains how here. Hint: saying the then-segregationist Thurmond should have won to prevent "all these problems over all these years" isn't one of the things he recommends.

Unless Lott goes, you can kiss that chance goodbye for a long time.

I just don't think most Americans believe Lott is racist

Most Americans haven't heard of this yet.

but I do believe most Americans believe the screaming banshees in the Black Caucus are racist and will use race at the drop of a hat.

Most Americans are at most vaguely aware that something called the Black Caucus exists.

You're wrong about X41 by the way. The reason he lost is not because of blacks but because of the PERCEPTION that the economy was in the ditch and the he didn't care.

Did I say blacks had anything to do with it? No.

It's all about reading comprehension.

You're hysterical about the reaction to this two years from now. If it wasn't Lott, these race pimps will make up another James Byrd ad. It's what they do.

If we don't get rid of Lott, they can make an ad that will make the racism charge STICK, which means not only an increase in black turnout and the end of any hope for progress with that demographic for a long time, but moderates and swing voters going Democrat. By calling for Lott to stay, you're fighting to get swing voters to break Democrat. You're fighting for the Democrats.

If he quits we're back to 50/50..

Big chance ya'll are taking.

The SC (and thus, the next several decades) could hang in the balance here.

What I'm saying is that if the forces of the Left are going to ceaselessly attack Lott for his harmless comments, they should also clean their own house. African-Americans should be able to see this plainly: the Left is coddling its own unrepentant racists, and it only raises the issue of race when it can be used as a political stick, to bash someone like Lott.

I'd rather have a chance of losing the Senate than the certainty of losing everything.
