Dio, again your selection and comments amaze. Oh, to have a press that would run a feature on the kites alone. Great job, as per usual.

CBB, thought you'd get a pic out of the going rate for a petition to the Kabul Supreme Court...

When kites are outlawed, only outlaws will have kites!

You can have my kite when you pry the bobbin from my cold, dead hands.

The work goes on.

Work continues at the World Trade Center site in New York, more than a year after terrorists rammed two passenger aircraft into the twin towers. The Lower Manhattan Development Corp, a city-state agency created after the Sept 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to guide downtown redevelopment, plans to unveil seven new designs for the World Trade Center on Dec 18. -- AP

The guy distributing the notebooks reminds me of something similar we did in Bosnia. We distributed propaganda Superman comics to the kids. No sh!t, written up in Serbian and set in Bosnia- I have no idea what they said but it was something the Psyops boys came up with.

Cool photo of Jupiter and Io.

Thanks for the post.

One could build the best possible defenses against intercontinental ballistic missiles and miss that possibility. I think as long as there are countries out there -- and there are -- who are as clearly determined as they are and they evidence it among other things, I mentioned the amount of resources they devote to being able to attack us. We need to be thinking ahead of them. We need to be thinking out of the box. We need to remember that there was a time when we said, I believe it was March of 1962, that it was inconceivable the Soviet Union would put missiles in Cuba. U.S. Army Specialist Derek Watson (R) leads a squad from Alpha Company, 2nd Platoon of the 3/15 Infantry Regiment of Fort Stewart, Georgia during a trench clearing exercise in the northern Kuwaiti desert December 9, 2002. Iraq's parliament urged Arabs to seek martyrdom by attacking U.S. forces in Kuwait, saying the Americans were preparing to occupy Iraq.

Re the "Antique Guns" shown at the bazzar in Afghanistan;

If I'm not mistaken, those muzzle-loaders our Troops are examining are M-1853 British Enfield .577" caliber rifle-muskets, which were used both in the Crimean War as well as our American Civil War by both Union and Confederate forces. They were second in numbers and popularity only to the US Springfield M-1861 .58 cal. rifle-musket.

If they are original 1853 Enfields and not replica reproductions, and in the condition they seem to be in (amazingly good for 145 years +), they would fetch around $1,000 apiece back here in the States - perhaps more. I sure hope that these guys are allowed to bring or ship some of these home as "war Trophies". I wonder how much the locals are asking for them?

Shucks; I reckon these guys deserve a great "deal" if anyone does, eh?

If, on the other hand, the muskets are "repros" made of rather dubious quality in the Middle-East in various places for reenactors or people who just want a funny-looking old musket to hang over the mantle, they'd be worth around $200 tops. But these look too good to be home-industry repros.

Now what the Afghanis are doing with 140 year old British muskets is beyond me - but I sure wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of them!

Those lucky dogs! :-)

Probably a zillion old British Enfield rifles, Mosin Nagants, etc. (not to mention AK-47s up the wazoo) available for a song. Better'n anything I was able to pick up at over here. But what are these? Enfields? Got three rings. All the Enfields I just checked on Google only had one or two.
