They are not.

From a military perspective:
Even with a nice paint job, the Hind is not very good compared to our helicopters. Additionally, their electronics/avionics are horrible. Why use soemthing that is unreliable, underpowered and a maintenance nightmare?

From a political perspective:
No, we would not use a piece of equipment that would be easily identified with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

No sir, we are not using former Soviet systems (or Russian, for that matter). Not smart.

Cheers

that's not Afghanistan ... look at the houses and buildings in the background ... more likely it's Russia or the Ukraine ... this thing has been at several air shows ...

Unreliable perhaps, but can't the Hind take quite a beating (i.e. survivability)? I'd think in Afghanistan that'd be a big plus.

The green one in post #1, looks like a giant locust.
Rev. 9:3 And from the smoke locusts came out on the earth; and power was given them, like the power of scorpions.

Rev. 9:7 And the shapes of the locusts [were] like to horses prepared for battle; and on their heads [were] as it were crowns like gold, and their faces [were] as the faces of men(pilots).

No matter what you thought of the Soviets, they really knew how to build helicopters.

This was posted shortly after 9/11 so it's been around a while. It's Russian, not American.

Taking a beating is fine--as an ol'A-10 fighter pilot I can see the value in that. However, the Hind still has problems when it comes to fly-ability and reliability.

We are not using the Hind, as it would be a maintenance nighmare and politically counter-productive.
(Nothing could hurt us worse than telling the Afghani's we are inviting the Soviets back in. . .)

Cheers.

There's a good chance that this is a helo from a Tajik military unit.

NPR (ignore their politics) announced earlier today that Tajikistan depoyed military forces to Qutar and other undiscolosed Gulf states for joint US training excerises. The Tajiks provided airbases and military support in the Afghan campaign. In my mind, something's up.

Thanks for the post on Hind Meek.
Sure...a lumbering predator..its time as a theatre threat passing..
Dynamic changes if one can [Blind]....the area ahead one is proceeding to.
Phantom radar projection....multiple projections...or just sear the path ahead with Multi-phasing EMP.
Have wondered how a slow helicopter can survive in the modern combat environment....look what happened in Mogadishu with cell phones and burning tires.

Should be an interesting match struggle in the future... you may detect someone over the horizon...and you may loose them suddenly too...warfare in the 21st.

Something isn't quite right here. Could this be a civilian version?

What was the chopper that got hit with the RPG round in the old 80s flick Red Dawn and limped away home?

Wasn't that an Mi-24?

(N.B. Found a couple of related links HERE (look at the paragraph titled "Misconceptions") and HERE (See the film stills at the right hand side of the page)).

The paint job won't cure the bird's problem of the main rotor blades being able to strike the tail boom.

To quote Egon from Ghostbusters: "It would be bad."

IF IT'S RUSSIAN, IT'S PROBABLY A PIECE OF JUNK, AND THE METAL COULD BE USED TO FASHION SOMETHING MUCH BETTER. WHAT i WOULD LIKE TO SEE IS SOMETHING ABOUT THE **CHINESE** USING AMERICAN C130's TO SHUTTLE WEAPONS BACK AND FORTH FROM NORTH KOREA, TO PAKISTAN. CAN SOMONE PLEASE TELL ME WHY WE ARE LETTING THE CHINESE SYSTEMATICALLY TAKE THE UPPER HAND WHILE OUR LEADERS KICK THIRE LEGS UP ON THE DESK AND TELL US AMERICANS "EVERYTHING IS JUST FINE, OUR RELATIONS ARE VERY STRONG". tHE CHINESE ARE GOING TO SCREW US, **DON'T THEY SEE**.
