What Trent Lott said was idiotic even if he meant it. You do not in this day and age say that you think a campaign that Strom Thurmond ran in 1948 with the sole platform issue of segregation, was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
It's ok to say that Strom is swell now, but mark my words, this will come back to bite dear Trent.

Lott is a REAL nice guy, and that just carries a little too far into his leadership...or lack thereof.

Sometimes, public statements by idiots deserve nothing more than derisive laughter. Such is the case of just about any of Jesse Jackson's bleatings.

I think Trent's quote was 'If Strom had been elected in 1948, we wouldn't have had the race problems we did [in the 1960's]
I think Trent was referring to Strom being the first Southerner to hire black staff in 1957.

It is difficult to criticize Strom's segregationist background while Byrd is still in the Senate but once Byrd leaves, praise of Thurmond will carry a heavy price.
That is why I've long maintained that our failure to be able to quote chapter and verse of the racism of Gore's father is a major mistake. The ultra-left wing media wouldn't have mentioned it (just as they wouldn't mention LIEberman's first wife), but old man Gore was a racist segregationist. If PanderAl runs again, these items must surgace.

Looks like Jesse found a couple for Bill, no?
The self-satisfied smirk on Jackson's face is pretty blatant, too.
