Sure. With the current republican majority (51-48-1) each senate committee will have one more republican than the democrats. Should the majority increase to 52-47 the republicans will increase their majority in each committee to two more than the democrats. Especially in the Judicial Committee this can make a BIG difference. Not only are more judges likely to be endorsed and passed on for full senate confirmation, but there will be one less obstructionist on the committee. This will be true of all senate committees.

The other subtle advantage is that this takes many dems out of the spotlight of the committees they use to gain national exposure. Hope that makes sense.

Roy Barnes antagonized just about every voting group in Georgia. I agree that Ralph Reed aand the Repubs nare getting too much credit for this. Although I didn't vote for Barnes, the guy sdhow a lot of guts in some areas. He took on the teacher's Unions and tenure and refused to back down. I don't think he is politically finished in any way. He does need to learn tact and quit acting like a bull in a china cabinet.

Thanks for the explanation, but that seems really screwball. (The two party system is a cockamamie non-Constitutional concoction anyway.) It's really weird that just 52 senators will give one party a two-senator edge in committees.

Voted at 9 am,,the turnout here is huge. Biggest I have seen since voting here for the last 6 years. Oh well, it was all white, all prosperous and more than half men. I asked what about the hunting and they all laughed. It is cold here,,high forties is freezing to us. There was one black couple, prosperous looking, my bet is they are voting Terrell. Anyway the tunout looked bigger than the general election for so early on a Saturday. I still think it is a cliffhanger and will be decided by a few thousand votes,,sorry but I am hoping I am wrong. I think Terrell coming out against birth control might just be a bad thing. Alot of people are not prolife and are voting for her cause she is a pub,,the anti birth control might just keep them at home. Anyway, have a great day!!

I've got relatives all over La. that will be voting for Terrell. My wife went to high school and LSU with Mary Landrieu. Said she was a fantastic person until she got involved in democratic politics.

Just got back from the polls and in my Parish (East Feliciana Parish)it looks good for Terrell! East Feliciana Parish is approximately 55% black and Landrieu carried the parish with a little over 50% in Nov. I stayed at the polls for about 1 hour and the crowd size seemed to be above average and all white, I don't think the blacks are coming out to vote - at least in my parish.

Wonderful report - we're hearing that turnout in the "Democrat" areas is not all that great. Neither is the energy of the campaigning - just look at http://www.theneworleanschannel.com too - virtually nothing there that says there's an election today!

Yes, and I believe ME may call counties "parishes," or they may have at one time. The "police jury" in LA parishes is the same as county commissions in other states. All this is from the Napoleonic legacy, which may also be the root of LA's traditional political corruption.

I also should have told you that Calcasieu Parish is Lake Charles and traditionally Democrat, but a Republican can sometimes draw upwards of 46 percent there. I think even Michael Stanley Dukakis won Calcasieu Parish. It is similar politically to the counties in extreme SE TX (Orange, Jefferson, etc.) heavily union and traditionally Democrat.
