An OB/GYN friend of mine just opened up his own office (Ohio) and had to come up with $70,000 down payment for malpractice insurance (now he can afford the monthly premium). He invested almost his entire life savings...

Last fall my Father , in Philadelphia, was just finished all of the preliminary testing that he needed to get his knee replaced, and the doctor came to see him with the reports.

The doctor said to him "I have good news and bad news. The good news is that you are in good shape and the knee replacement should be a breeze, the bad news is you will have to find someone else to do it."

When Dad asked why he was told that the Doctor had just got his bill for malpractice insurance, and was giving up practicing in PA, and moving to New Jersey, and Dad's insurance wouldn't cover him there.

My Father's best freind, also a surgeon, wouldn't help either. His Insurance premiums went to $175,000 a year, and he was just giving up his practice, and moving to Arizona with his son.

Indeed. I was reading in the NJ Asbury Park Press (app.com) recently that doctors are leaving their practices in droves they can no longer afford the premiums. It truly is a frightening scenario as the baby boomers age.
