MEXICO CITY -- Mexico's foreign minister, Jorge Castaneda, said his country would begin a "bottom-up campaign" to win U.S. public support for a proposal to legalize 3.5 million undocumented Mexican workers in the United States.

Castaneda said Mexican officials will begin rallying unions, churches, universities and Mexican communities.

"What's important is that American society sees a possible migratory agreement in a positive light," Castaneda said. "We are already giving instructions to our consulates that they begin propagating militant activities -- if you will -- in their communities."

Why should American citizens be forced to pay for the welfare, food stamps, schooling, medical care, housing assistance and incarceration for people who are here illegally?

Do you think it's good economic policy for American workers' wages to be driven down by illegal aliens who work for less?

Do you think it's good economic policy for illegal workers to be paid "under the table", not having to pay state or federal income taxes?

Do you think it's good economic policy for our country to be importing poverty and ignorance?

I would be interested in your answers.

In the old days here in California, we had what was called the bracero program. Mexicans were able to come to California to work the farms and they went home after their jobs were complete. The american farmer profited and the mexican worker profited. Then along came Ceasar Chavas who wanted to organize and unionize the workers. He did and that killed the bracero program. Now no one is profiting.

I find it amazing that this thread has degenerated so rapidly. The original point was that some pinhead Mexican Marxist foreign minister was preparing to cause problems via Mexican consulates in the United States, which he clearly is. All of a sudden, it turns into some crapper-cleaner cheap labor problem. Unbelievable. Nobody seems to care that a hostile foreign government leader is trying to stir up trouble among the millions of illegal aliens squatting here. HELLO!!!!
