Mexico to campaign to legalize workers

11/23/02

MEXICO CITY -- Mexico's foreign minister, Jorge Castaneda, said his country would begin a "bottom-up campaign" to win U.S. public support for a proposal to legalize 3.5 million undocumented Mexican workers in the United States.

Castaneda said Mexican officials will begin rallying unions, churches, universities and Mexican communities.

"What's important is that American society sees a possible migratory agreement in a positive light," Castaneda said. "We are already giving instructions to our consulates that they begin propagating militant activities -- if you will -- in their communities."

It's one thing if WE decide we need a temporary worker program and WE say who can and who cannot get into it.

I wish I had thought to frame the argument that way. You are exactly right.
What I had been trying to say is that I think we DO need a temporary worker program. And, yes, we should be the ones to say who can come and where they can work. As I've said in other posts, in my area, these workers are needed for many jobs. Others think they aren't needed where they live. So there may well be needed restrictions on where they can go, and what jobs they can take.

The most sensible idea would be to have an enforceable guest worker program and to really crack down on illegals. That would serve all interests best.

Even when a person has been doing such "evil" "illegal" deeds such as cleaning toilets, picking vegetables, and making beds?

There - that is more like it.

Is this some kind of game you're playing to frustrate and anger people?

There are probably 5 billion around the world who would love to come here and clean toilets, pick lettuce, and make beds. We can't let them all in, that's why we have laws against illegal immigration. I'm sorry that bothers you, but that's life. And any politician that agrees with you needs to be booted to never never land.

The Mexicans have had a tougher row to hoe with their 80 years of rule under the PRI.

Who the hell cares about the mexicans, I care about Americans.

Yep the world of Brownie74, where those damn immigrant problems are no more.

The only problem is that hard working Mexicans and other immigrants seems to be Brownie74's problem.

It doesnt matter where you live. If illegals are there they can take wages that are unacceptable to citizens who have to work legally and live within our society.

I only hire legal citizens. And I don't care what their ethnicity is. If native born Americans wanted the jobs, I'd likely hire some.

OK, you are solidly behind in the building and manning a 2000 mile Berlin wall on the southern border and everything will be alright. No more damn Mexicans to worry about.

How about responding to the points I make instead of chopping down strawman arguments that you'd like to attribute to me?

We dont have to put up a berlin wall in order to enforce our immigration laws and stop giving out amnesties. Please remember that illegal immigration has grown exponentially as we've stopped enforcement and started giving rewards and amnesties. What happens when you dont enforce the law and reward criminals? You get a crime wave.

"I would rather have have the immigrant mother cleaning toilets and supporting her family as a member of society than the lily white limosine dope smoking liberal loser whose only goal in life is to rant and "destroy" McDonalds and Starbucks."

Get back to me when there are 10 million such liberals in America. Oh, and when they're citizens of another country with divided loyalties as well.

Mexicans and other immigrants seems to be Brownie74's problem.

Not if they're legal. I have always supported our immigration laws and our quotas.

The poor immigrant mother cleaning toilets to support her family. Where the hell's the father? Does she have insurance? No, I doubt it. So that means that all of us gets to pay for her and her children's healthcare.

Does she make enough to feed her children? No? Then I guess that we have to give them welfare too. Does she pay taxes? No way cleaning toilets. So we get to put her little darlings into our schools and pay for that too. And don't forget that they need breakfast and lunch. And we get to pay for that too.

And if she's illegal and getting all these little freebies that means that she has forged papers. She has probably stolen a citizen's identity. That should be a felony. You know just like the drug dealer.

I cleaned houses to help raise my children. I worked at McDonalds for a time. I've worked in chicken houses and plants. I raised my children without govt. help. I also had insurance from a part time job.

Don't tell me that Americans will not do these jobs. Let the economy goes down a bit more and watch the Americans start screaming about the illegals.

Better get busy hoss!!

Sigh, I dont wanna do this work. Think I'll hire some illegals.

Is it your plan to stick the taxpayers at large with the medical bills?

You are a hoot! How old are you? 15, maybe? There isn't always going to be a mommy and daddy to take care of you. Sooner or later, you're going to have to take care of yourself. And your employer isn't going to be like mommy and daddy.

A guest worker program yes citizenship NO.

I know you are just trying to be reasonable, but even if a guest worker program was made fair to US citizens I would still bet that not too far down the line it would be compared with apartied.

The fact that people are even fighting about this amazes me. Illegal immigrants have broken the law. They should be immediately deported. Period.

Are all laws debatable now? Why are we even having this conversation?
