50-100,000 Romanians Await Speech by Bush - CNN Live Shortly
CNN

Posted on 11/23/2002 6:26:25 AM PST by mitchbert

President Bush is to speak in Revolution Square (I believe) in a few minutes. There are upwards of 100,000 people there to hear him waving American flags and cheering. The First Lady came in moments ago to a huge ovation, Powell is there as well.

Should be good...waiting enthusiatically.

What exactly did he say regarding Russia? Thanks.

Sorry for the delay getting back to you...stuff to do on Saturday and all that.

Without having the text of the speech in front of me he basically reminded the crowd how important it was that Russia be a partner in peace and development as well as the formal Eastern Bloc nations. That they had nothing to fear from Russia any longer, that they were now allies as well. Essentially, put the past behind; remember but don't let the past impede the future. The crowd didn't cheer as far as I could tell, but they didn't respond negatively either.

Why this impressed me was it was a truth that needed to be said. If this were Klinton there's no way he would have ever taken the step to say it. Just more me, me, me, ain't I great, etc. Bush let them know that they are part of a greater evolution of the Free World, yet they must always be mindful that others must be supported, and are owed patience while they work through their challenges, if this great moment in human history was to be succesful.

I was impressed as I didn't expect it. I would imagine that www.whitehouse.gov will have the text of the speech posted soon, maybe tomorrow. I checked and it wasn't there yet.

Cheers for a great weekend, eh!

Should have scanned before I responded.

See post 98. My comments were based on the message I thought he was trying to deliver, or at least the impression they made on me. The text is at the post.

Cheers!

Thanks to all for the warm welcoming messages !

http://www.mediafax.ro/eng/top10/topint1.shtml

From mediafax:
.... The promises made by the Alliance to support Romania are "sacred", the US president assured, "we will keep our promise". "Should any nation threaten Romania - US will stand by your side", said president Bush. "Already our troops are side by side in Afghanistan, already Romania has joined the global war on terrorism and we thank you."

He then switched to US fight on terrorism saying the world has suffered enough from fanatics who tried to impose their will by fear, and mentioned the Iraqi regime that NATO and its allies are now confronting.

After the warning given to Iraq, president Bush referred to the US relationship with Russia, assuring once again that NATO's latest expansion till Russia's borders and the inclusion of Romania in the Alliance should not be viewed as a threat to Russia.

"A peaceful future Romania will strengthen the Alliance and will be a bridge to Russia", he said. "Russia has nothing to fear, because Russia needs peaceful stable neighbors like Romania. As I told yesterday to president Putin, there is no need for a buffer zone", between the Alliance states and Russia.

P.S.Finally Romania is breaking away from Russia !
Beware of Russia ! The will never forget that you have defeated them !

Welcome, Licinius!

Your comment on the Russians never forgetting is why the President goes out of his way to make them feel that the entire overthrow of the Soviet system was their idea. Ha! Pretty soon they will all be bragging about how the President recognizes the genius of Russia.

Thanks for the response. Clinton certainly never would have told these people what they needed to hear. He is the master of telling people what they WANT to hear. The classic trait of a liar.

>How did you find freerepublic?
I think it was more then half a year ago !Since then I read the posts quite regularly .I am not sure how I found this site , but at that time I was really interested in supply side economics .(http://www.polyconomics.com/univ.htm)

What's your opinion on this ? Has it worked in Reagan's period ? Why was it discontinued ?

Unfortunately in Romania , taxes are very high , we have some problems also with coruption and we still have a lot of old state owned industries ( completely inefficient)

>What does your screen name mean?
it was a roman emperor named Licinius ( no special meaning , just liked the name)

Romania has reason to stand proud.

Romania got rid of the evil dictator Ceausescu by standing him up and making him face the firing squad. He deserved it.

Yeah, well. I just saw the CNN evening report on the speech. Of course they didn't show the crowd and the few people they did show were shown over and over as if they might have been the only ones there. Then they stated, "The crowd was friendly, though smaller than expected." Tens of thousands and they call that "smaller than expected".
CNN Lies.

"The crowd was friendly, though smaller than expected."

Supposedly they were all heading to the stores to purchase Al Gore's book. ;)

Yes, and I have a feeling if there had been a few unfriendlies there, the CNN report would have definitely focused on them and made them appear more than they actually were.

Amazing that so many non-Americans love the President. I loved the photo yesterday of a Czech colonel saluting Bush. It was amazing.

What are the feelings of americans towards romanians and Romania ?

All I know is that during WWII resistance folks out of Yugoslavia and Romania etc, saved my dad and his co-pilots life. They helped them escape to safety. This "large" American family thanks all those resistance forces for helping return both of them safely home!!

*I understand that the "crowd" there today kept pointing to the sky, motioning for President Bush to look up... they pointed out the rainbow to him, and he smiled from ear to ear when he saw it!!!!! Salute, Romania!!!!!!
