The Bush administration wants to grant amnesty to hundreds of thousands of Mexican illegal aliens now in the United States, according to the new U.S. ambassador to Mexico.

Tony Garza, sworn in this week at the White House, told reporters in Mexico City that reaching an accord legalizing the status of Mexican immigrants

I agree with you! Relax. Take a deep breath. Go to the park - while you are still free...

My understanding is that GW wanted to ask Congress to legalize Mexican aliens if they took jobs others didn't want:

The pay determines whether someone wants the job or not.

It went from American to illegal where I live when the general contractors realized they could pay much less and make arrangements to keep typical liabilities off the books...

And, a white kid coming out of high school in the 1960's and 1970's could make a decent living, and even afford a house in those days by working in construction. Not likely the norm anymore. The illegals will bid outrageously low, and how can you compete with that?

I personally know that this is the truth.

For every single one you illegally hire, there are 2 new ones trying to get here within 12 months. The wage you pay them goes back to Mexico to support their families without any of them having to make their own world a better environment to stay in.

I hope you get caught and are punished to the fullest extent of the law if you keep it up.

Very predictable, totally disastrous. Bush is going to push this assault on America’s sovereignty through come hell or high water. In the meantime I'm going to check into what laws I can safely break and get an Amnesty for it. I’m not hopeful I’ll find much.

Absolutely agree. This represents Bush's third effort to amnesty millions of illegal aliens since 9/11. He is doing exactly the opposite of what needs to be done to establish some sort of real homeland/border security. Amnestying illegal invaders will make America less secure and will only serve to encourage further flouting of US laws by the criminally inclined.

Amazing, isn't it? Welcome to the United States of the Americas. Don't doubt it for a second.

People like you are a significant part of the problem.

.LOL...son, if build things in Nashville like I do and you hire general contractors then you can be damn sure that some wetbacks are going to be working on the concrete and masonry. I have yet to ask a General Contractor to verify the citizenship or green cards of all the empoyees of his Subs.

I can see given your homepage locale why you're a bit on the huffy side. Your kind words are something I hear quite a lot from folks and not just on this subject. People like me are always part of all the damned problems.....I guess I'm cursed. Never claimed to be a choirboy anyhow.

So, we're better educated here at FR than average and have better jobs and incomes. If none of us has been beat out of a job, that means no American has?

No, it doesn't, but there certainly is a lot of hollering here about lost jobs in the abstract. I guess I'd settle for some inherently unreliable hearsay from someone who was told by someone else that they couldn't get a job because an illegal alien was hired instead. Surely, there should be some of those stories floating around.

Maybe the reason we haven't seen them is because illegal aliens aren't educated. Americans are. The illegal alien who beats an American out of a job was probably up against a pretty poorly-educated American without much motivation. The illegals aren't taking good jobs. You don't see them on the assembly line in Detroit. They aren't the tellers behind the counter at your bank. Oh, I'm sure there is the exception where some illegal has fooled the system for years and moved into a decent job. But that's not the vast majority of them.

Anyhow, I realize that I have little chance of making anyone on this thread reconsider their position. For some, this is the most important issue out there, and they won't be satisfied with anything less than mass deportation and troops on the border. I prefer other solutions, and we'll never agree.

We know a crane operator in Long Beach harbor who saw several Chinese illegals streaming out of a container in the hold of the ship. He reported it, and it appeared that they were detained, but the local newspaper didn't even report it, no news of whether they got deported, nothing. I have read that they pay many thousands of dollars to the ship captains for passage. One incident that was reported was when several Chinese illegals were found dead as doornails in a container. Another incident was reported when Chinese illegals were found on the beach in Newport. Wonder how many get through undetected?

I agree with that. I've seen it over and over again first hand. But then, we all knew the gig was up when the bloated, leftist Ag bill passed...

Can you think of a more important one? We have 5 to 10 thousand illegals crossing everyday and a Mexican government openly bragging in 20 years they will control our political process because of their numbers.

That does not sound like the country I grew up in, and it is not one we should be handing to our kids and grandkids.

One example of the jobs they are stealing is summer and part time work for teenage and college kids - jobs that most every currently middle aged person used to do in the summer and after school. My sons can't get jobs like these anymore because the construction companies want all Mexican crews. These people, incidentally do crappy work. They may look like they work hard, but they work stupid. They p*ss in the street and hang out drunk at 7-11s. The only people who want them here are the rich lazy homeowners that are too lazy to do their own yard work.

LOL....another John Law on this thread.

I would like for you and Spiff to tell me how to hire General Contractors or Construction Managers to build things and ensure they will hire no wetbacks or sub to firms that hire wetbacks. It's impossible.

You want me to be my own little border patrol cop going around and asking all the brick masons for their "papers"?

Very funny.

If I want something built here, I have to hire Contractors to build it and they ALL hire wetbacks or Subs who hire wetbacks.

Ok....so I guess I'm part of the problem...fine. I choose my windmills to tilt at and I'm not going to commit business suicide over this one.

What do you do for a living btw?

Since you are a media consultant for the GOP you must have some inside feel for how pols and their staffs really think. Do many really favor this influx of immigrants? how many are true believers in immigration vs how many just want to avoid the issue all together. Dems will use the issue aganst them if they come out for reform. Even in a safe district they might not want to fire up the base about it because the powers that be on high wouldn't like it. So reform talk is a career killer either from the Dems or the GOP.

Yes, one has to wonder anymore. We all knew what we were getting with Bush. A 4 year slowdown to oblivion. Better than a democr@p, that's for sure, but not good enough to save this Republic. Maybe he'll prove us wrong. I think I'm going to take a break from politics for a few months and re-evaluate, re-prioritize and re-ignite for my final 'push' for America. This alphabetocrical/liberal/liberal-light system in America is such a let down. After such a valiant effort in November, we get dribble instead of speaking the realities of life to our enemies. And, Mexico is an enemy. Canada is an enemy. We're fooling ourselves to think they are our friends.
